Why did I stop posting demos on soundcloud years ago?
This is something I've thought about and dealt with my whole career, and since I didn't study neither music, psychology or neurology academically in school I don't know what to call this. I understand intuitively that it is a bias. Its probably real dumb and might not be neither accurate or even scientific. I just see this happening in a lot of people.
In my opinion, I think our brain wants what's familiar. What's good or bad is determined by the observing brain, rather than the product itself. The product might contain some science that initially triggers it to feel good. But the memory created in the brain by that impact cannot compete with the same product being too different at a later time. Especially when the initial product is hammered in through days, weeks or months.
I think if the observing brain feels the product needs something it wont complete its bindings (i.e This could use some more bass boost or be double the speed).
If the final product delivers exactly that, its satisfied. But "the demo bias" is something I think that happens more often than not. Most people don't really care if it sounds perfectly mixed or mastered if it gave them a good impact at the demo stage. Anything deviating from that wrinkle shape or neuron connection will be rejected as an inception attempt.
This is why I record and show "work in progress" with bad phone video sound. Leave an obvious "this could sound better" for the brain.
