"Mental Fatigue" from working in the VAR room. Yet he was in UAE 48 hours before this error. Maybe it was jetlag from working for Man Citys owners shortly before giving a hugely beneficial offside error which benefitted Man City funnily enough.
π¨JUST IN: Darren England says he worked with a SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST after Luis Diaz VAR ERROR in 2023β¦ but βmade hundreds of other correct decisionsβ:
He says the VAR hub is a "high pressure" and sanitised environment, where "MENTAL FATIGUE" takes its toll.
"I remained as focused as I could be, working hard, trusting myself, because for all that decision in the Liverpool-Tottenham game, I've made hundreds of other decisions that are correct."

The refereeing Liverpool have been subjected to, particularly at Anfield, is genuinely staggering. And Iβm tired of legitimate criticism being dismissed as βsour grapesβ before anyone even bothers to look at the evidence.
Paul Tomkins has researched this extensively, going back decades and some of his findings are genuinely ridiculous.
Consider these stats from his April 2026 study:
β’ ZERO opposition players have received a foul-related DOGSO red card at Anfield since 2009. Thatβs 325 home league games without an opponent being sent off for denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity through a foul.
β’ 3 Liverpool players received DOGSO red cards at Anfield in just 28 games under Slot. More than opposition players received at Anfield in the previous 25 years combined.
β’ Liverpool havenβt received a penalty in the opening 15 minutes of a league match with fans present since December 2012. Man City received 14 (!!) in that same period.
β’ Liverpool went 305 consecutive league matches between 2015 & 2023 without an opposition player receiving a 2nd yellow. Thatβs 8 years. Home or away.
β’ Since VAR was introduced, Liverpool have received just 2 VAR-awarded penalties for fouls. Man City received 11. Liverpool have also had 7 awarded against them.
β’ Liverpool received ZERO subjective VAR overturns in their favour before the 28th minute across approximately 260 matches. Man United received 7, Arsenal 6 & Man City 6.
β’ Salah averaged just 0.83 fouls won per 90 minutes, ranking outside the top 2,000 players in Tomkinsβ study. Anyone who watched Salah knows how ridiculous that is given how frequently heβs grabbed, pulled & manhandled.
β’ Liverpoolβs average foul free-kicks won dropped from around 12-13 per game before Klopp to just 9 after his arrival. Only Sheffield United recorded fewer in Tomkinsβ comparison.
β’ Only 51% of Liverpoolβs penalties were awarded at Anfield, compared to approximately 63% at home across the league. Some home advantage, eh?
And perhaps the most damning stat of all:
Of the 56 highly contentious league incidents Tomkins identified against Liverpool in the VAR era, 53 (95%) happened when the match was level or separated by just 1 goal.
These are game-changing decisions. Penalties, red cards & incidents that can genuinely decide matches, title races & entire seasons.
Think about Tarkowskiβs challenge on Mac Allister, Γdegaard practically playing basketball at Anfield, Senesiβs handball or Salah getting manhandled every other week without a whistle. Oh, and literally disallowing a completely valid goal at Tottenham (no, YOU let it go).
At what point do we stop pretending this is normal?
And what frustrates me most is how quickly people dismiss the conversation as βsour grapes.β As if being a Liverpool supporter somehow invalidates the evidence. You can be biased & still be absolutely right.
Iβm not suggesting these stats automatically prove some grand conspiracy, but the disparities are extraordinary. And when you actually watch the incidents themselves, itβs difficult to understand how some of these decisions are even possible.
Weβre talking about penalties & red cards. Literally the most consequential decisions a referee can make. And somehow Liverpool consistently find themselves on the wrong end of them, even at Anfield - especially at Anfield - where weβre supposedly benefiting from this enormous home advantage.
Why shouldnβt that be questioned?
Credit to Paul Tomkins for actually doing the research & documenting this over the years.

Israel killed eight people including a child in Gaza this weekend as they continue their genocide.
After a weekend of arresting pensioners for protesting against this horror, Labour has today collapsed local agreements putting Israel far above serving our local communities.

Almost 90% of England's water companies are still acting illegally, still dumping huge amounts of sewage into our environment.
βPeople are sick of excuses,β screams Dame Angela Eagle. We've heard it all before and yet nothing, nothing changes.
One interesting note "The UK is one of only two countries in the world where the provision of water is fully privatised. The other is Chile, where water privatisation was imposed in the 1980s by a military dictatorship." Hmm? π€

βWhen Andy Burnham came in he promised change, not just any change, big change! He promised to end 40 years of neo-liberalism.
Donβt take this the wrong way, but that wasnβt a budget to end 40 years of neo-liberalism, right?β Chancellor: βI would say that is wrong.β He claimed heβd set out decisions that would change Britainβs energy system and market for good. Sophy: βLike what?β
Chancellor: βLike an end to levies on household bills.β
She cut him off: βCome on! Youβve been talking about nationalisation of our utilities and ending 40 years of Thatcherism.β
Chancellor: βHeβs talking about bringing energy bills down and in line with Europe.β
Sophy wasnβt having it: βYouβre talking about levies on bills; this is a different order of magnitude.β
Then the line that finished him: βGive me one thing in this budget that Rachel Reeves wouldnβt have done as chancellor?β
He had nothing.
Sophy Ridge was right to pin the Chancellor to the wall, but let us be entirely clear about where the real betrayal lies.
The problem with this budget is not that it coddles people on benefits or fails to kick the poor into line. That is cheap, reheated Tory rhetoric. The rot goes much deeper.
Andy Burnham pitched up to high office talking of an epochal rupture: the burial of forty years of neoliberalism, the reclaim of our public assets, and the rebuilding of a broken Britain. Yet when his Chancellor walked into that television studio, all he had in his pocket was an adjustment to household energy levies.
Ridge gave him no room to run. When she pointed out the glaring chasm between ending four decades of Thatcherism and tinkering with the tariff codes on an electric bill, he stammered about regional tax revenues. When she demanded a single measure Rachel Reeves would not have signed off on, the silence was deafening.
That silence is the sound of surrender.
This country does not need more managerial technocrats shifting deckchairs while private monopolies bleed every household dry. We have had forty years of that disease: crumbling schools, poisoned waterways, public transport run for foreign state profits, and wages eaten alive by monopoly rents. Working people are not turning away from Westminster because the state is too generous. They are sick of it because governments keep borrowing their hopes at the ballot box, only to govern like accountants who fear their own shadow.
Shaving a few pounds off a surcharge is not radicalism. It is the bare minimum required to keep an exhausted public from outright revolt. If public ownership of vital infrastructure is off the table, and if the Treasury remains captive to the very market dogmas that gutted our industrial towns, then the promise of structural change was merely an advertising slogan.
Governing is about choices.
When you promise to bring down an empire and end up offering a voucher scheme, you do not just disappoint your base. You kill their faith in politics altogether.
