The Bank of England has raised interest rates to 4%, supposedly to tackle inflation.
There is just one problem with this decision. The Bank knows that much of the inflation we are suffering is being driven by rising oil and energy prices, largely resulting from conflict in the Middle East.
It also knows that raising interest rates cannot reduce those prices.
So why is it doing this?
The answer is that the Bank believes it must suppress demand elsewhere in the economy to compensate for rising energy costs.
In other words, it is deliberately making mortgages more expensive, increasing business borrowing costs, discouraging investment and reducing household spending power.
And all this when people are already struggling with higher energy bills. That is problem number one.
There is, however, another problem. Higher interest rates increase costs for businesses, which can then feed through into higher prices. They can, in that case, add to inflation rather than reduce it.
The Bank is imposing economic pain to address a problem its chosen policy cannot directly solve.
That is not sound economic management. It is the consequence of an economic dogma that refuses to recognise the difference between inflation caused by excessive demand and inflation caused by supply shocks.
When will we learn?
Four league goals conceded before today, none at Firhill. Sensational first half, then a sore one. But some of the reaction would put bitter old firm fans to shame 😂 One bad half doesn’t undo the progress. The manager’s earned a bit of trust. Back him and his choice of GK.
I’ve spent years on here sharing my boys’ football journeys. On Tuesday, my eldest, Kieran, made his senior debut for @AlloaAthleticFC . So many miles, setbacks and freezing nights behind that moment. Hard work, resilience and the odd wee break. Couldn’t be prouder. ❤️⚽

Congratulations to two of our under-19s squad, Callum Hannah & Kieran Donnelly, who came off the bench in last night's KDM Evolution Trophy match against Annan Athletic.
Kieran made his senior debut.

Kris Boyd says a clear shove in the back. I’m confused, in the Championship we see this every week, and not once do we see a foul given. What is the rule these days? And why does it take VAR to step in here?
So noisy in here! Cracking turnout from the @PartickThistle fans. ❤️💛🖤
Shocking that the holders aren’t invited.

“To send him off for that, we may as well all go up the road and stop playing football if that's going to be a red card every single week.”

Not sure what makes me more angry.. the Paraguay tactics or the refereeing performance. Utterly disgraceful how they are getting away with this.
The standard of officiating at this World Cup has been all over the place. Yet Scotland still couldn’t get a single referee selected. That’s either an incredible indictment of Scottish refereeing… or FIFA’s talent spotting.
Hi @Mets and @MLBFanSupport. We’re visiting from Scotland with 3 kids and had tickets for tonight’s game. With the severe weather and a flight tomorrow, we’re unsure to make it to Citi Field. Are there any exchange, credit or refund options available for unused tickets? Thanks.
