"Overly stringent criteria exclude the very patients we need to study."
New MyLymeData study shows restrictive eligibility criteria exclude of patients with persistent #LymeDisease (PLD) from enrolling in clinical trials. Here’s how we used real-world data to tackle this. 🧵 lymedisease.org/exclusion-cr…

Shocking facts about NIH #Lyme funding (2013-2023): ID'd in 1977, this infectious disease still has no effective vaccines, tests, or treatments yet: —$6.8M was spent trying to prove it’s an autoimmune syndrome. —$9.8M was spent studying “Lyme arthritis.” —$18.6M went to Allen Steere, 81 yrs, (1977-2024), to study “Lyme arthritis” —69% of Steere’s funding goes to Harvard overhead. —$2.1M was spent on human treatment trials. buff.ly/3zmYF18

People with chronic symptoms of Lyme disease, often dismissed by mainstream medicine, now face an additional hurdle: ruling out long Covid. But, paradoxically, interest in long Covid is fueling needed research... My latest, w/ @AliaSajani: statnews.com/2024/09/09/lyme…

Pat Smith was a mentor, a friend, and a fierce advocate. There was no one better to have at your side when the stakes were high. Her fearlessness was contagious, infectious, and a marvel to see. I will miss her dearly. @Lymenews @LymeDiseaseLDA
Pat Smith was a pioneering patient advocate and fierce force for truth in the #Lyme disease community. She will be greatly missed. Her mission carries on with vigorous momentum as patient voices are at last being heard & federal funding is finally increasing. Robust science is helping validate what patients and advocates, such as Pat, have known for decades. Pat's dedicated advocacy has made meaningful inroads in progress towards better understanding of the complexities of Lyme infection-associated chronic illness & the vital need for improved patient care. Rest in peace & power, Pat. We will continue your important work. lymediseaseassociation.org/n… @LymeDiseaseLDA @lyme_action @Lymenews @BayAreaLyme @LymeAlliance

--this is a terrific boost for all of the patients who have been discounted and dismissed by the medical community for having persistent Lyme disease. Bravo to Rebman, Yang and Aucott! @Lymenews
Illness invalidation by medical professionals is a common yet understudied problem in #Lyme infection associated chronic illness that a new Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine study helps quantify. The @HopkinsMedicine study finds that patients with post-treatment #Lyme disease (PTLD), particularly women and younger patients, are prone to illness invalidation from medical professionals. Patients who reported the highest levels of invalidation were also found to have higher symptom severity, lower quality of life, and lower trust in physicians. Improved physician education is needed on the potential negative impact of illness invalidation on patient health outcomes. Reducing illness invalidation within patient-practitioner encounters could positively affect illness burden and quality of life for Lyme disease patients. rdcu.be/dRzJF @SciReports
