Hey friends! Many of you have told me that you enjoy my technical Motorsport content and the educational posts I write. Some have also asked how they can support me. While I have always provided my content for free, I decided to add some options for people to support me financially. I’ve also added a subscriber option for deep technical content I will post for only subscribers. But, I will still have plenty of free content on here and saved on my buy me a coffee page.
I love to write as well as speak, so I will be looking to create more journal style posts, as well as quick tech byte videos.
I would also like to make more long form and partner with teams to do track side videos for you!! However, I need to update my camera, microphone, and editing software to take it to the next level. So just know any donations you provide will go right back to making even more content for you!
I appreciate all of my supporters/followers and value our interactions. This is a passion project for me, and I want to keep doing it more and more. So thank you all for the many different kinds of support you give me! Please do spread the word!
🫶 ❤️

Ferrari being the only team not to run rookies in this session kind of feels like when you turn the difficulty all the way down on your video game

I did a simulation of turbo lag in Mexico, it's about 70% worse here. And smaller turbo will be less effected for sure. However, at high speeds it will have to spin faster.
Turbo lag is back in F1, and my model estimates it's 70 % worse in Mexico City.
Until 2025, an electric motor on the turbo (the MGU-H) spun it up, so there was almost no lag. The 2026 engines don't have it. Only the exhaust can spin the turbo now.
At 2,240 m the air is 23 % thinner: the turbo has to spin ~10 % faster for the same boost and takes ~1.7× as long to get there.
(Video 8× slow motion: in reality it's a fraction of a second.)

The Mexico City GP is upon us, and as usual there are tons of questions about what effect altitude has on a race car. In this video I summarize for you all of the ways that race cars can be effected by the higher altitude of the Mexico City GP.
So who will benefit the most from this?! Comment below 👇
Smaller turbo could help with turbo lag. Less inertia for rotation startup, so could help on the low end of the torque curve. Top end could be limited, however, by the RPM limit and the higher rotation speed of the smaller turbo at peak pressure. Higher altitude will require more compression for the same low altitude performance. Where is the peak RPM for the smaller turbo at altitude, and will they be capped? Or will this higher RPM generate too much heat as well?
IMO this report from the RACE is only one part of the story and not the whole part.

Mexico’s thin air forces F1 turbos to work harder and at higher RPM to produce the required airflow.
The Race reports Ferrari’s smaller turbo should cope better with that challenge.
Lewis Hamilton also expects around 25–30% less downforce than the last time F1 raced here, but believes the SF-26 “should be good” if Ferrari can switch the tyres on.

Two different aero designs. The Merc is designed to hold out the turbulent front wake just outboard of the driver where it is widest, then aggressively tapers back. This aims to bring clean energy around the mid line of the sidepod through the undercut to the rear.
The Red Bull Racing design holds a very wide outboard wall that continues further back to keep the front Tyre wake out. While providing a clean pathway for high energy air to travel to the rear by following the water slide along the sidepod top surface.
Two different approaches.
Ah yes. The gaiters I was speaking about in my previous post. The junction where these parts intersect is important aerodynamically and mechanically.
A subtle change to #RedBullF1's front corner at Austin.
The flexible gaiters sealing the suspension arm openings in the brake duct appear fuller and more rounded.
The revised profile reduces material strain during steering movements, helping prevent tearing.

Excellent look at the split regions along the topside of the rear corner of the floor. You can see the air sticking to the undercut as it travels rearward.
The airflow near the floor edge naturally migrates to the low pressure region under the floor. The rear corner is where teams have been developing unique solutions to shape this edge flow into the floor through slots cut into the aero surface.
Have to believe that the gaitor update is part of the solution process to solving some of the performance degradation Max was discussing.
As far as I know, the gaitor is the elastomeric (or the like) flexible junction where dynamic suspension arms interface with static aero surface. You often see these where an A-Arm intersects with the nose of the car. Here they circle the intersection with the front corner near the brake deflector surface.
Maybe it’s not aero related, but more of the mechanical connection at the upright interface degrading over the race impacting the responsiveness of the front end.
Great technical explanations in here. Excellent piece.
'Aero degradation' has been an issue for Red Bull in 2026, but it's more complex than it sounds.
Pierre Waché explained what's going on when we sat down for a chat together recently. #F1

For all my fellow technical project managers out there… can you imagine how this discussion went when creating your Kano model of requirements for this design? 😂😂
Thruster for 180 roll: “delighter? Nah must have”
Ability to drive upside down: “performance? Must have!”
RBR has known about this for almost 5 months now. There will likely be a general design change in this area due to a host of regulation changes for 2027, not Judds thus one
🚨 FIA will ban a configuration used by Red Bull and copied by Audi for 2027
Red Bull had floor support to have a much more aggressive geometry for the lower part of sidepods.
FIA will limit that support to 5 mm requiring a car redesign in that part.

Apparently now they also have a wet weather grip limiter switch too.. 🫢🫣
🚨 Toto Wolff blasts fans who believe they're favouring Kimi Antonelli over George Russell as "brainless"
"They're brainless, whoever thinks that. I mean, it's completely nonsensical. We've had it in the past with Lewis fans. I don't know what's going on? Do they think I have a button that says 'George engine failure now' or disadvantaging one driver against the other, when we're fighting for a constructor championship?"
"...Sometimes I read what people write. I find it hilarious. These people really contribute to my own entertainment when they're abusing the team or myself. I'm Satan, I've heard."
"Zero understanding or respect for people who come up with these things. Rather than watching Formula 1, they should do Teletubbies or some Mickey Mouse."

"The overtake was an unfortunate consequence of the significant closing speed differential and, in these circumstances, [the Stewards] determined not to impose a penalty"

Damnit Toto you are on a heater lately! My level of respect is growing day by day.
