A midsummer sunrise, an earlier stone circle, a buried carved stone—and an ox facing the tomb’s entrance. Join me at Bryn Celli Ddu to explore a place people kept returning to for thousands of years. There’s much more here than first meets the eye.

Yes indeed. Nice walk to get there too
Bryn Celli Ddu is famous for its midsummer sunrise. But an earlier stone circle, a buried carved stone and later Iron Age neighbours open a much bigger story.
Come and explore it with me.

The path ran under a close cover of leaves, with the light coming through in scattered patches. Ferns grew thickly on either side, still green against the brown litter of fallen leaves. A heavy, moss-dark trunk leaned in from the right, its branch arching over the track.
Nothing moved. The place was quiet, with only the sense that other people had walked there before. The path continued between the ferns into the trees, ordinary enough, and yet it seemed to hold its own silence.

This is a fascinating article with beautiful photographs, fantastic diagrams and links to earlier fascinating papers. Enjoy with a pot of tea and a Welshy lardy cake. Thank you to the author. I’ve saved for my Welsh trip next year. 🤓
