the passage assumes the kid has seen a harbor. field trips got cut years ago and the reading test never got the memo. we stopped paying to build background knowledge and kept measuring it. then we write intervention plans for kids who were never taken anywhere.

41% of parents of kids under 6 use screens as a reward for good behavior at least once a week. when the tablet is the prize, books start to look like the price of earning it. rapid national parent survey, sept 2026: rapidsurveyproject.com/wp-co…

audio narration does something a worksheet cannot. a parent who reads little english can sit through the same story and talk about it at dinner. the kid gets a reading partner at home. the family's language stops being treated as the thing holding him back.

84.9% of kids who read every day report high wellbeing, vs 71.1% of kids who rarely or never read. biggest gap was confidence: 84.3% vs 58.2%. survey of 52,000+ uk kids, ages 8 to 18 literacytrust.org.uk/researc…

personalization quietly becomes tracking. a kid gets leveled in september and the algorithm feeds him the same band until june. we used to call that the low reading group and at least everyone could see it. now it arrives as a dashboard and nobody has to say it out loud.

k-2 reading has stalled. the share of kids on track to learn to read has not moved in three years. 4 million kids screened. prnewswire.com/news-releases…

every classroom platform assumes the same adult logs in every day. then there is a sub, and the lesson is locked behind one teacher's account. thirty kids wait through a password reset. software built for perfect attendance fails the exact week a school needs it.

nsw surveyed 1,057 students on school screens. 84% of high schoolers said screens distract them in class, and screen use for learning at school doubled in years 7 and 8. education.nsw.gov.au/news/la…

ai reading tools say a wrong date in the same calm voice they use for a right one. an adult can hear hedging when it is there. a 2nd grader hears authority either way. sounding certain is a design choice, and kids are the ones who cannot check it.

jama pediatrics just pooled 23 meta-analyses covering 2.8 million kids in 64 countries. more screen time tracked with lower achievement and weaker language skills. the catch: most studies counted minutes, not what was on the screen. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

every edtech demo runs on a fake classroom. twenty kids, one reading level, nobody absent, wifi perfect. then it ships into a room with thirty one kids across six reading levels and two chromebooks that will not hold a charge. we keep buying the demo.

some tools make the teacher configure rubrics, groups, pathways, themes, permissions, and reports before a child sees one sentence. complexity feels powerful in a sales demo. in a classroom, it is a wall between the kid and the text.

96% of classrooms run on devices. only 18% of teachers say they do more good than harm. 29% say more harm. gallup asked 2,101 teachers in may. news.gallup.com/poll/714479/…

struggling readers learn polite avoidance fast. sharpen the pencil, choose the bathroom pass, volunteer to hand out papers. adults see helpful independence. the system misses the kid building a whole day around not reading aloud.

click depth can mean interest. it can also mean a kid is lost. if a student clicks five hints on a fractions problem, the dashboard may celebrate persistence while the teacher sees confusion. engagement data needs human judgment attached.
