Do you do research in HCI? Help our group improve tools for reading research papers in a 1-hour Zoom study 📖✨. You'll get a chance to use a new reading tool, and a $30 prepaid debit card as bonus! Let us know if you want to participate at bit.ly/pennhci-reading-tools
Are you a Ph.D. applicant interested in HCI? Consider applying to @PennHCI! This year, my group will have openings that could be great for those interested in HCI/Programming Languages or AI-augmented documents. DMs are welcome!
At #UIST2024 and rained out of a leisurely lunch 🌧️? Stay dry with us at the industry career session instead! Grab a quick bite and then join us at 1pm in Allegheny 3, where UIST'ers from Meta, Google, and Adobe will talk about internships and industry positions.
Interested in internships and industry positions in HCI? Pencil into your calendar the #UIST2024 industry career information session on Wednesday 1-2pm in Allegheny 3! Meta, Google, and Adobe will be coming to speak about positions and answer your questions.
At #UIST2024 see our latest work in interactive program verification! @hgoldstein95 presents a tool for making sense of the hundreds of program outputs generated during automated testing. Our study showed improved ability to assess test suite strength. Mon. 11:40 in Allegheny 3.

One of the coolest parts of my job is I get to teach classes like this one---my new research seminar on Interactive Reading 📖✨ Open to students at @CIS_Penn and the university broadly. Check out the teaser for info!
Have you ever written Java code professionally or open source? If so, you can help us make better tools for answering hard questions about code by taking part in @litao_yan's (paid) study.
Are you a professional Java developer? We at @PennHCI are running a study on how devs answer tricky questions about their code. Join us for a 1-hour Zoom session and earn a $75 gift card! Interested? Sign up here: bit.ly/3W8r0PV
Congratulations @hgoldstein95 on passing his Ph.D. defense with flying colors with an impressive body of work from PL, HCI, and software engineering.
The rainbow colors are from my camera, though they might have well been there, because the presentation really was that dazzling.

What might smart code comprehension tools look like in the age of GitHub Copilot? Check out our vision in our lab's upcoming #chi2024 paper led by @litao_yan!
Excited to share our latest work, "Ivie: Lightweight, Anchored Explanations of Just-Generated Code." We developed a tool that pairs with Copilot to provide timely, concise explanations of code suggestions. Read our #CHI2024 paper on arXiv: bit.ly/ivie-chi24 #Copilot

ALT A code editor, containing a function named “create_window.” Below the function name, Copilot has generated a 15-line code suggestion. The suggestion is accompanied by automatically-generated explanations, which are shown in overlays next to the code. Explanations are shown for both multi-line segments of code, and for individual expressions (e.g., describing the function and and arguments involved in an API call that the user is hovering their mouse over).
Learn about the cool things my colleague @DrMetaxa and I are doing to grow and develop @PennHCI in this month's @PennEngineers magazine. And enjoy the epic picture of our our stoic battle faces.
Penn Engineering's Human-Computer Interaction Lab, led by Professors Danaë Metaxa and Andrew Head, is transforming how we interact with computers, in fields as varied as targeted advertising and health: bit.ly/47Urg9b @CIS_Penn
Do you work on automated testing? Read our upcoming #ICSE2024 paper on "Property-Based Testing in Practice." We document PBT's deep use at @JaneStreetGroup, and how PL+HCI research can improve PBT.

> We address these questions using data from 30 in-depth interviews with experienced users of PBT at Jane Street, a financial technology company making heavy and sophisticated use of PBT.
If you use property-based software testing tools (and in particular, Hypothesis), reach out to @hgoldstein95! Harry is envisioning how to evolve these tools to help people test better, and we can use your input.
