Wilson still striking his signature pose and smiling after everything they had endured while poor Scott looks so defeated and miserable.😭
#OnThisDay in 1911, Captain Scott’s main polar party departed from Cape Evans hut, Ross Island, to begin their expedition south. Eight days prior on 24 October, Scott dispatched an earlier support party equipped with two motor sledges to lay supplies. These failed after little more than 50 miles (80 km) of travel. Scott’s main party comprised 12 men, equipped with ponies, sledges and dogs. Only four of these men could accompany Scott all the way to the South Pole; Henry Bowers, Edgar Evans, Laurence Oates and Edward Wilson. What played out over the following weeks is one of history’s greatest tales of endurance and exploration. 📸Scott's Party at The South Pole. Scott's group took this photograph of themselves using a string to operate the shutter on 17 January 1912, the day after they discovered Amundsen had reached the pole first. I did not know that the Terra Nova cat was called the N word. Sigh. Neat trick, though, kitty!
