Afghan women continue to find ways to resist and rebuild their lives under Taliban rule, despite restrictions on education, employment and public life. Drawing on 165 testimonies conducted by DROPS, this article by Lailuma Nasiri and Haleema Hassan (@giwps) highlights the often-unseen ways Afghan women navigate Taliban restrictions, support their communities and keep hope alive. “While the world may only see them as victims, their reality is far more complex. Despite deep frustration, fear, and grief, many Afghan women have doubled down on their efforts to lead a better life.” Read more: thediplomat.com/2026/10/we-h… dropsafghanistan.org/afghan-… #afghanistan #afghanwomen #womensrights #peacebuilding #humanrights

Under the Taliban’s new Criminal Code, a woman who tries to escape violence can be punished for it. The man who harmed her can walk free. Women surveyed by Bishnaw named detention and lashings as the punishments women most often face. The vice police and judges were named most often as the ones carrying them out. The law does not protect women. It is a tool to oppress them. Read the full survey: bishnaw.com/impact-of-the-ne… #RightsNotFavors #Afghanistan #AfghanWomen #WomensRights

New Research | When we talk about Afghanistan under the Taliban, the conversation often stops at the ban on girls' education. But our new brief by @OfficialMariamS and Ayesha Khan (@ODI_Global) suggests there is a bigger story underneath. Testimonies from students, parents and teachers in Kabul reveal that the Taliban are using madrassas to socialise both young boys and girls into the regime's strict interpretation of Islamic Law. For girls, the ban on formal education beyond Grade 6 is part of a wider effort to embed the submission of women and girls to men in social, economic and political life. For boys, the system steers them toward support for the Taliban's ideological vision, and the brief finds this is fostering mistrust within households and social instability. That is why the authors say this reaches beyond Afghanistan. They warn it poses long-term threats to regional peace and security and call on the UN and international stakeholders to recognise and monitor it as a global security concern. Education is usually seen as a development issue. This brief asks us to see it as a security one too. “The magnitude and gravity of this gender oppression is tangible … What this exhibit can do, has done, that I can’t do, is that it creates, through art, a human experience.” Richard Bennett, UN Special Rapporteur @SR_Afghanistan on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan, reflects on Where Justice Lives and the experience of encountering the gravity and scale of gender persecution in Afghanistan. Where Justice Lives is an exhibition on the gender persecution of women and girls in Afghanistan, bringing together different forms of evidence and lived experience to document what has been lost, what is being restricted, and what is at stake. The exhibition brings this documentation into conversation with photography, testimony and sound, making visible how these restrictions shape everyday life. The tragedy of Afghan women is also a reflection of how underrepresented, and often comparatively powerless, women remain in the global decision-making arena. They often gather, listen, advocate, and issue statements of solidarity, but major policy decisions are still overwhelmingly made and implemented by their male counterparts in democracies and non-democracies alike. One telling observation: while the Presidents of the United States and China discussed bilateral and global affairs in Washington, their first ladies visited a museum for a cultural program. There is value in cultural diplomacy, but the contrast was striking: the men sat at the policy table, while the women were given the traditional diplomatic role of culture and hospitality. They did not even convene a parallel gathering to advocate for the rights of women and children globally. It is a small but symbolic reflection of how far women still have to go to achieve equal representation at the tables where consequential decisions are made.
At Where Justice Lives, Afghan women's-rights activist @parwananijrabi shares her experience of protesting for women's rights following the Taliban takeover—and surviving imprisonment and torture for refusing to be silenced. Her testimony is a reminder that Afghan women's resistance continues, even in the face of extraordinary danger. Presented by @drops_afg and ConneXus Collaborative. After months of continuous work and activism, seeing this photograph suddenly took me back to those exact moments. These were not simply tears of happiness. They were something deeper than a woman’s tears. In that moment, I felt a profound sense of pride a realization that the dignity, courage, and pride that the Taliban have spent the past five years trying to erase from Afghan women could never truly be broken. We were there. We spoke. We testified. We stood together. And despite everything they have tried to take away from us, we are still standing, still telling our stories, and still demanding justice, dignity, and freedom. @OfficialMariamS @ShaharzadAkbar @drops_afg @HRDPlusNetwork @rawadari_org
These photographs bear witness to the People’s Tribunal for Women of Afghanistan in 2025. They capture the quiet preparation, the courage of survivors as they shared their testimony, and the moments of care and healing that followed. Each image honours women who endured Taliban brutality simply for standing up for their rights, dignity, and freedom.
