@michaelgove it’s wrong to say the reason for current high numbers of poor mental health in children is (only) social media - that is a significant factor - but so is pressure from our current education system. See psychologist @drtjap new book which spells it out. Meanwhile my 16 YO is sitting 24 exams for his GCSEs this summer. It’s an insane amount of pressure on a young brain during these important teenage years.

Research again indicating the importance for young people's #mentalhealth of having trusted relationships - a person to talk to who they felt was on their side. Here the focus was in #schools but so often in #camhs we don't provide this. theguardian.com/commentisfre…
Our national evaluation of the @TNLComFund funded HeadStart programme highlights the importance of trusted relationships to young people’s #MentalHealth and wellbeing. Find out more in a new blog by Professor @Jess_Deighton #HeadStartLearning crowd.in/3V5T6F

@jon_severs is right - We’ve had a huge response to my piece about how a system of relentless academic pressure is contributing to the increase in #mentalhealth problems in young people. I think it really struck a chord this week with #SATs being so difficult & #GCSEs starting.
Huge response to this piece from @drtjap on how high attainers are increasingly a vulnerable group when it comes to mental health

This article is about the impact of academic pressure but obviously I don’t see it as the only factor in #camhs increased demand. #socialmedia and #pandemic two other important pieces to that jigsaw.
However, to misquote Desmond Tutu we do need to stop pulling kids out of the river of #mentalillness and go upstream and figure out why so many of them are falling in.

New report by @ChildrensComm
This certainly aligns with what I see clinically - young lives blighted by porn, either becoming sexualised too young and being victim to seemingly porn-influenced sexual assaults.
Today I am publishing new evidence on pornography’s influence on harmful sexual behaviour among children.
As the Online Safety Bill moves through Parliament, I want to use this opportunity to turn the tide on pornography’s harms to children.

Interesting proof-of-concept study linking reductions in social media use to improvements in body image in #eatingdisorders. Adds to a growing evidence base of a link between social media use and body dissatisfaction. apa.org/news/press/releases/…
State of the nation 2022: children and young people’s wellbeing - makes grim reading. An indictment of how we lived, educated & parented this generation of teenagers & young people? Probable mental illness running at 1 in 4 in 17-19 yrs old. gov.uk/government/publicatio…
Anxiousness is up in PRIMARY and secondary aged children. The percentage of children reporting low happiness with school is up. Could relentless testing and scrutiny be bad for mental health?

Give your daughter the ultimate gift this Christmas: tell her never to take the weight of it on her shoulders and that you will have no expectations of her to run it in any way.
