🎉 Congrats to @JetBrains on Mellum2-12B-A2.5B-Thinking, an open-source 12B MoE that activates just 2.5B params, handling both natural language and code with a 128K context. Mellum2 runs natively in vLLM from day 0, with reasoning parser and tool calling for agentic workflows. 🔗 recipes.vllm.ai/JetBrains/Me…
Mellum started with code completion. Mellum2 is built for more – handling both natural language and code. A 12B-parameter open-source LLM for routing, RAG, and sub-agents, optimized for ultra-low-latency inference. Now on @huggingface. Learn more: jb.gg/zpb9dp

Europe will love Tesla self-driving! Due to the extreme regulatory burden of the EU, which in general stifles innovation in Europe, Tesla owners there have been stuck with basic lane-following.
German TV reporter testing @Tesla FSD (Supervised) V14 in the country as public transport in rural areas: "I was genuinely impressed. In the situations where we experienced the system, it worked perfectly and safely. I hadn't expected that. Even in the bad weather conditions in the Eifel region. In many cases, it reacted at least as well as a human driver, if not better. If Tesla is ever allowed to roll out this system nationwide in Germany, I think it will have a major impact on mobility. And that will only be the beginning of some very significant changes in transportation..."

Lemmings turned 35 this year (a few days ago)... Not just one of the most unique games ever, but also one of the best. When Lemmings hit the market in February 1991, it felt like a completely new concept - something never done before. At least I don’t remember any game that came even remotely close. On top of that, it had an incredibly gorgeous style, beautiful graphics, the cutest animated pixel characters, and one of gaming history’s most recognizable soundtracks. I remember one review giving it a 99% rating with the comment that “we need to leave the 1% off so there’s room for something better - if it ever comes” (paraphrased). In all the years since, you’d have a hard time finding a more unique concept that’s also so very playable. The early levels are super easy, basically a walk in the park, gently introducing the idea and controls. But once you reach the later levels, boy, does it get tough. It never felt unfair, though - the key was smart usage and timing of the different Lemming types. That’s why the game was also great with friends: you’d sit around the screen and try to figure out the best strategy together. Lemmings became one of the most sold games ever on the Amiga. Deservedly so. This game is timeless and 99% perfection.

As a new parent, I spend a lot of time changing diapers and feeding the baby. 15 months ago I wasn't doing any of this. I felt busy then too, so where did all this childcare time come from? I analyzed the Census Bureau's American Time Use Survey to find out how most parents do it. The answer: less sleep and less screen time. The funny thing is, parents report being pretty happy about this tradeoff.

The amazing blogpost from @gordic_aleksa is alive at vLLM's blogpost blog.vllm.ai/2025/09/05/anat… (after more proofreading and clarifications)! Looking forward to future series of tech deep dive blogposts😍
New in-depth blog post - "Inside vLLM: Anatomy of a High-Throughput LLM Inference System". Probably the most in depth explanation of how LLM inference engines and vLLM in particular work! Took me a while to get this level of understanding of the codebase and then to write up this one - i quickly realized i understimated the effort. 😅 It could have easily been a book/booklet (lol). I covered: * Basics of inference engine flow (input/output request processing, scheduling, paged attention, continuous batching) * "Advanced" stuff: chunked prefill, prefix caching, guided decoding (grammar-constrained FSM), speculative decoding, disaggregated P/D * Scaling up: going from smaller LMs that can be hosted on a single GPU all the way to trillion+ params (via TP/PP/SP) -> multi-GPU, multi-node setup * Serving the model on the web: going from offline deployment to multiple API servers, load balancing, DP coordinator, multiple engines setup :) * Measuring perf of inference systems (latency (ttft, itl, e2e, tpot), throughput) and GPU perf roofline model Lots of examples, lots of visuals! --- I realize i've been silent on social - many of you noticed and thanks for reaching out! :) --> I'm so back! lots of things happened. Also, in general, I'm a bit sick of superficial content, it really is an equivalent of junk food (h/t @karpathy). I want to do the best/deepest technical work of my life over the next years and write much more in depth (high quality organic food ;)) so I might not be as frequent around here as i used to be (? we'll see). I'll make it a goal to share a few paper summaries a week or stuff that's relevant / in the zeitgeist. If you have any topics that happened over the past few weeks/months drop it down in the comments i might focus on some of those in my next posts. --- Huge thank you to @Hyperstackcloud for giving me an H100 node to run some of the experiments and analysis that i needed to write this up. The team there led by Christopher Starkey is amazing! Also a big thank you to Nick Hill (who did a very thorough review of the post - basically a code review lol; Nick's a core vLLM contributor and principal SWE at RedHat) and to my friends Kyle Krannen (NVIDIA Dynamo), @marksaroufim (PyTorch), and @ashVaswani (goat) for taking the time during weekend when they didn't have to!

What happened in Poland is nothing short of an economic wonder, its standard of living will surpass Japan this year. Free market, hard work and entrepreneurial spirit are the only way to escape socialist misery and poverty. Congratulations Poland.
