The only sane political/cultural reaction to this terrifying heat emergency is to realise we really are now on the brink of the abyss - and to move to a kind of "war economy" to haul ourselves back from destruction. Politicians, cultural figures, ordinary people must react
The heatwave scorching western Europe is the most severe and widespread ever and is only possible due to the climate crisis driven by fossil fuel burning, scientists have said. Almost half of Europe’s 850 largest cities are also enduring their worst ever heat stress, a combination of temperature and humidity, they found. Muggier conditions mean sweating is less effective at cooling the body, making heatwaves even more dangerous. The analysis comes as the UK recorded its hottest ever June temperature on Thursday, 36.7C (98.06F) in Somerset, and much of western Europe recorded a sharp rise in medical emergencies, including some deaths. In summer 2022, more than 60,000 people died due to heat in Europe. The statistical analysis needed to assess the impact of the current heatwave will take time to complete. Nonetheless, the heatwave is certain to exact a heavy toll and is also disrupting lives and livelihoods, with schools closed, hospitals struggling and rail and air journeys cancelled across the continent. The new analysis by scientists from the World Weather Attribution (WWA) consortium shows how rapidly extreme heat is worsening as carbon pollution continues to pile up in the atmosphere. As recently as 2003, a heatwave like the current one in Europe would have been 2C cooler due to the lower level of global heating at the time. In 1976, another famous heatwave year, it would have been 3.5C cooler.

Whoa!
Gadi Eisenkot reverses course and says he will break the election deadlock imposed by Jewish Israeli parties’ boycott of Israeli Arab parties. He will form government with the backing of the Arab Joint List. This would mark the end of Netanyahu as PM.

Until the costs outweigh the perceived benefits of continuing to wage war on Ukraine, Putin won't let up. It's up to Ukraine and its partners to raise those costs to an unacceptable level. rferl.org/a/mike-pompeo-inte…

Ra’am says that these conditions are acceptable to them, and Joint List says they don’t want to be in the coalition anyways but will provide support from the outside. Still a tough road ahead but maybe doable? We will see.
Eisenkot’s conditions for Arab parties and all other prospective coalition partners to join a government: 1- Recognition of Israel as a Jewish, democratic, liberal, and egalitarian state. 2- Commitment to the values enshrined in Israel’s Declaration of Independence. 3- Mandatory military, national, or civilian service for all Israeli citizens. 4- Recognition of Hamas as a terrorist organization and a commitment to dismantling its military and political power in the Gaza Strip.

Every word. And, it was Rabin who set the precedence of an Israeli gov that needed Arab votes in order to continue a path towards peace. Do not forget, it was Hadash that supported Rabin once his gov dropped under 61 seats.
💥Yitzhak Rabin erupts in rage and disgust when asked a question regarding "a Jewish majority." Thirty-one years ago the racist equation was completely taboo. Today, it is Netanyahu's daily (and mouldy) bread.

As I’ve been saying since 2014, if you think defending Ukraine is expensive, Russia winning would be exponentially more so.
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon warns a Russian victory in Ukraine could shatter global alliances, reshape the world economy, and force nations to question whether they can still rely on America. 🇺🇸 Asked what a Russian victory in Ukraine would mean for the global economy, Dimon responded: “It could be a potential disaster. This is the first war in Europe where a free, democratic nation was invaded by 200,000 or 300,000 Russian soldiers under the threat of nuclear blackmail. We’ve never had nuclear blackmail before. You’re also teaching the whole world that maybe having nuclear weapons is a pretty good thing, because people will be afraid of you, and you can abuse a neighbor if you feel like it. Russia would be on the border of NATO. Obviously, NATO is rearming right now. But the other thing is, it’s affecting all alliances, military alliances and global economic alliances. And the nexus of Iran, North Korea, and China makes it very hard, in my view, for the Chinese-American relationship. China says they’re neutral, but they’re helping. We are clearly not neutral. If Russia wins, you might see a lot of people deciding: Will America stand up for Europe? Can you rely on them? And if you can’t rely on them, what are you going to do? That includes economically. Every nation is going to say, what makes me secure? Energy, food, all the things I need. I’m worried that if Russia wins, you could see the world enter a little bit of chaos as people realign alliances and economic relationships.”

31 October 1973. 1st episode of the 26-part classic ITV documentary series World at War was broadcast. It was narrated by Laurence Olivier with music by Carl Davies. It cost £900,000 (worth £11 million today).
