perfect example of why the AI TL does not work

my point was never that skibidi brainrot is a perfect translation, it was that people who strongly hate localization often do not understand how language works on a fundamental level, and either complain without offering a solution or offer nonsensical solutions

nonsensical nature of Helios’ speech, but is also intelligible enough that the audience can sort of work it out, and is also part of a consistent characterization that must be maintained across hundreds and hundreds of lines of dialog.

Would this be better? Yeah I think so. Is this even remotely possible for a localization team in crunch time? Idk. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt that they’re doing their best.

There is no such thing as translation without localization. Any decision a translator makes to use one translation over another based on the target audience is localization. It is impossible to do this for an entire work without taking the audience into consideration.

a lot of hardcore western otaku think localization should be catered specifically to them and not to millions of english speakers across multiple generations who have varying levels of understanding of Japanese culture.

everyone is ignoring the obvious solution that they should have localized Helios with Cockney rhyming slang

this is not what the original discussion is about but the uma gyaru, and most anime gyaru in general, are absolutely gyaru culture erasure. they are so divorced from the actual movement that its probably disrespectful they actually use the term
please help me out here bc im genuinely trying to understand.. (maybe im too woke for this) why r people saying helios is gyaru culture erasure? is this or is this not implying that gyarus speak an entirely different language? 😭 like this feels like an attack on a subcommunity

and don’t get me wrong i still like these characters. this is not a critique on them or anyone who likes them. it is a crique on the sanitization of counter-culture movements in pop culture
