I am traveling as I type this. Headed towards Japan and it’s rather emotional. It is the culmination of everything I’ve experienced in my life up to this point. From a far, Japan, this tiny little island of a country, has influenced my entire life in profound ways. From childhood to adulthood. I have never told this story before. When I was nine years old, we were poor and homeless. We had no bed, no home, no nothing. My single mother of three kids was savvy and found a kind older lady who took us in temporarily. We stayed with this woman in her home for a few weeks, maybe months. Pokemon Gold version just launched around this time. While having nothing, my mother somehow managed to get me Pokemon Gold Version for my old gameboy. My birthday was November 16th and Gold Version came out on the 21st so she somehow scrounged together enough money for a birthday present. I recall a vivid memory of sitting in a tiny corner of this woman’s house with my gameboy. I was scared and shy being in the home of a stranger, and a place that felt foreign. I’m sitting in this corner, I’m playing Gold Version on my gameboy and suddenly all of these problems in life melted away and I was having the time of my life. It was bliss. It was happiness. In a moment of struggle and life challenge, I think back at that time and my brain feeds me happy thoughts. My brain forgets the struggle and remembers the joy that Pokemon gave me. I’ve always had a bad memory but perhaps I should be thanking it for its selection of good memories. And this memory of sitting in a corner playing Gold is one of my oldest ones I’ve been luckily enough to recall. Red and Blue versions were amazing — but Gold Version felt like the next leap. It was magic. And it brought me so much joy. Throughout my entire life — I have stories like that where Japan 🇯🇵 dipped its magic into my life and makes me profoundly happy. Japan — I love you. ❤️
