In 1998, a woman stopped Shaquille OβNeal outside an arena and told him his sneakers cost too much for kids. He took $2,000 out of his pocket and handed it to her. She slapped it out of his hand. That same day he walked away from a $40 million deal and went off to make a $20 shoe.
He tells it himself in the video below.
He was leaving the building. She started on him before he reached the car.
βYouβre charging these babies all this money for the shoes.β
He had about $2,000 on him. He pulled it out.
βMaβam, I donβt make the prices. Here you go.β
She slapped the money out of his hand and kept going. Why wouldnβt you make a shoe thatβs affordable.
On the table at that moment was a Reebok deal. Forty million over five years.
βI thought about it. I was like, you know what, sheβs right.β
βSo that day, cut ties with Reebok, starting my own brand.β
He did not negotiate a payout.
βI told them: keep the money. I donβt want to make it a fight. Iβll still wear the shoes during the season.β
Then he went to Walmart. The new shoes were priced at $29 and $19.
He also took Reebokβs designers with him.
βItβs not that kids donβt want to wear 20 dollar shoes. They donβt want to wear shoes that look like they cost 20.β
βI donβt care how much money I lose. Make these kids look good.β
He says the line has now sold more than 400 million pairs.
Twenty-three years after he walked out, the company he is part of bought Reebok.
He gave up $40 million rather than keep selling a shoe a mother could not afford.
Would you have taken the forty?

I feel so sorry for Netflix era kids. They will never know the high stakes adrenaline of running to the bathroom/fridge/bedroom in a single ad break, with the beckoning call of a sibling screaming "It's ONNNNNN" to send you hurdling over furniture to get back in time.

My male coworker complained that my bra straps were showing, he called it βdistractingβ and said the male equivalent would be a woman seeing a man walking around with his penis out. I just looked at him and asked if he genuinely understood what a bra is. A bra is underwear. Genitals are not. The actual equivalent would be a guy wearing his pants low enough that his boxers are showingβ¦.which plenty of men do without anyone acting like itβs obscene. The fact that some men canβt tell the difference between underwear and genitalia says everything. And somehow, theyβre still trusted to legislate womenβs reproductive rights.

I miss traditional 2d disney animation.
It's almost like a lost art at this point.
It's rare to find other studios which handle animation this vigorously.

we were never meant to do everything perfectly every single day. sometimes, just getting through the day is enough
STOP TELLING BROKE PEOPLE TO BUDGET.
THERE, I SAID IT.
YOU CANβT BUDGET YOUR WAY OUT OF POVERTY.
If I make $2,900 a month and $2,850 goes to rent, groceries, utilities, gas and insuranceβ¦
WHAT EXACTLY AM I SUPPOSED TO BUDGET?
Sometimes the problem isnβt spending.
There simply isnβt enough money left after surviving.

You can't make a regular person hate A.I.
The average person doesn't care about artists, or writers, or the environment.
So tell your mom that her kids are gonna have AI p*rn made of them and it'll be legal. Tell your uncle their electric bill is gonna go up and it will be legal. Tell your bro that their water is gonna go bad and it will be legal. Tell your grandma she won't be able to breathe outside and it will be legal. Tell your sister they're gonna make deep fakes of her and use it to make her look racist and it will be legal. Tell your bestie they'll make fake n*des of her and it will be legal. Tell your father he'll be miscategorized as a felon on a google search and it will be legal.
Yes these are all things that have happened and can happen. So stop using the artist argument for regular people. Try these instead π

Telling women we can only have abortions if weβre r*ped is saying:
βYou donβt earn autonomy over your body until a man violates it.β Every law like this is a lesson in misogyny.

YOUTUBE JUST MADE CREATING SHORTS WAY EASIER.
You can now turn existing YouTube videos and livestreams into Clips or Shorts directly inside YouTube Studio.
YouTube can:
β’ Suggest moments worth clipping
β’ Generate an outline of the video
β’ Let you select sections from the transcript
β’ Automatically reframe them vertically
β’ Add captions and save them as drafts
This is a pretty massive update for creators.
The hardest part of repurposing long-form content has always been the extra workflow.
Find the moment. Cut it. Reframe it. Caption it. Export it. Upload it again.
YouTube is starting to handle more of that process for you.
For streamers, podcasters and long-form creators, this makes turning one video into multiple pieces of content significantly easier.
