During the wedding scene of The Godfather (1972), an elderly man takes the microphone and begins to sing a traditional Neapolitan song. This is Gennaro Amato, a renowned Neapolitan comic performer who was one of the great figures of Italian-American stage and recording culture in early 20th-century New York.⁣ ⁣ The piece he performs is “C’è la luna mezzo mare” or “There’s a Moon in the Middle of the Sea”, a classic Sicilian wedding song. The song is full of meanings and humor. It’s an old folk tune about a mother and daughter discussing possible suitors.⁣ ⁣ 𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦’𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘰𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘮𝘪𝘥𝘥𝘭𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘢, 𝘮𝘢𝘮𝘢, 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘥,⁣ 𝘔𝘺 𝘥𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰? Lyndon Johnson was one of the greatest deal-makers in American history. He was a master persuader - he could make even the most cynical politicians (even himself!) believe anything. He was also a master strategist - he used political leverage to reward allies and punish enemies. Robert Caro explains which was more important to Johnson’s power - his persuasion or his strategy:

Really enjoyed this characteristically excellent @dwarkesh_sp interview with Robert Caro. And I was amused that Caro, like me when Dwarkesh interviewed me, was vocally startled by how sharp and interesting his questions were.
The master biographer reflects at 91. The Robert Caro interview. 0:00:00 – How Caro gets people to talk 0:05:03 – Does America need a little more Moses today? 0:12:42 – Moses the young idealist 0:17:57 – Watching Moses lose power 0:24:01 – Did Moses realize he was changing? 0:27:53 – Building during the Great Depression 0:32:51 – The threats and promises of Lyndon Johnson 0:36:08 – Could Kennedy have passed Johnson’s laws? 0:41:00 – Getting a book down to one sentence 0:46:21 – All the material that never made it into the books 0:52:59 – Loneliness

Replying to @PabloIglesias

SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

CAREFUL here. We’re skating on thin ice. There is an important political dimension to this controversy. Saez and Zucman are known "liberals" in academy, and have long advocated things like progressive taxation and different schemes for greater redistribution. Cowen, by contrast, comes from a broadly libertarian, pro-market tradition and is considerably more skeptical of such policies. Now he presents an AI audit claims to have found over 2000 problems (!!)in research by Saez, Zucman and co. so, in a series of tweets, Cowen calls for a radical reassessment of their work, while Zucman questions the scientific credibility of the audit. This SOUNDS PRECISELY as one of @TimHarford's recurrent warnings. When evidence supports our existing a priori beliefs, we tend to ask: “Can I believe it?” When it challenges them, we ask: “Must I believe it?” We readily accept findings that confirm our worldview, while subjecting inconvenient evidence to far greater scrutiny. Worse still, intellectual sophistication can make us particularly good at rationalizing this asymmetry (!!) None of this tells us who is right. It may be possible that the AI may have uncovered serious errors, while some alleged mistakes may simply reflect legitimate methodological disagreements. But the political distance between the parties (and the heated tone of the debate!) is a red flag. The temptation to celebrate or dismiss the findings before thoroughly examining them is considerable, on both sides. My opinion: let's independently verify the alleged errors and apply the same AI scrutiny to research across the ideological spectrum. Above all, let's ask ourselves: would we react the same way if the political positions were reversed?
