The NS has been alarmingly sensible recently so it’s heartening to see it still has this stuff in the locker
OPEN LETTER: Sally Rooney is a writer, not a terrorist. Her books must be available to the public. Their withdrawal from sale, on the basis of ill-conceived and draconian anti terror legislation, is an affront to basic principles of free speech and expression so long taken for granted in this country. We categorically reject censorship - whether direct or indirect - and urge the government to change course, amending the legislation which has led us to this point of repressive absurdity.

OpenAI, Anthropic & another US AI company donated at least ~£40,000 worth of prizes to a hackathon at Number 10 this week - yet the government didn’t announce their involvement publicly (I only found out via an FOI request). What’s more, each company got to send two people into Number 10 for the event. So they gave a gift, and they got access to Number 10 as a result. I don’t think unannounced freebies like this are appropriate when so much rests on how (and whether) the government regulates AI companies.

Whatever you think of fact and fiction in the lives of Jeffrey Archer and Jason Arday it is hard not to note that both JAs would have been speaking at 7.00 pm tonight in Cheltenham had their stories not changed. @CheltLitFest

Scoop: The Green Party member behind the 'Zionism is racism' vote is close friends with an Al Qaeda terrorist. Approached by the Telegraph, Lubna Speitan defended Mingh Quang Pham, who is serving a 44-year sentence for plotting a suicide bomb attack on Heathrow. He had planned to target passengers returning from Israel, using shrapnel dipped in rat poison. In 2015, Ms Speitan offered to testify in Pham's defence in a US court. Today she said it was "insulting" and a "character assassination" to ask about her relationship with the convicted terrorist, and claimed it was part of a "mainstream media" plot to discredit her. Jeffrey Archer has died at the age of 86. The novelist and former Conservative party deputy chairman died peacefully at home on Monday, according to his publisher HarperCollins. In one of the final interviews before his death, he spoke to The Spectator’s editor, Michael Gove, about his last novel, Adam and Eve, in which the lives of two children born on Armistice day in 1918 are changed by war. Lord Archer explained that he had been inspired to write the book by the events of September 1940, when Hitler changed his mind three times about invading Britain.
