Back to the office! I have moved lab and office many times during my PhD but would never imagine ending up in one with such fantastic view! Working efficiency has been greatly improved. Never been so grateful about being able to work in an office before 2020. @AcademicChatter

Endless visa applications for conferences; tons of paperwork to maintain legal status; Unexpected restrictions on work and extra complexity for tax. People inpatiently asked why I always had this or that non-academic problems, I said not being a citizen is not my fault.
Do US citizens understand how stressful it is to be an immigrant scientist in the US? Far from family/friends, never ending visa bureaucracy & payments, constant fear of not being allowed back in the US, or being forced to leave your home/job/PhD due to some ban

I emailed an academic to ask them to send me a pdf offprint of their otherwise inaccesibly paywalled new paper and was told that to do so would be β€˜unfair to the journal’. I must be living in a parallel universe. I’ve reviewed for that bloody journal twice for my usual Β£0 fee 🀯
