Movements don’t start with press releases.
They start with members refusing to accept poverty wages.
The fight for para pay wasn’t born in union headquarters—it grew from rank-and-file organizing that made ignoring paraprofessionals politically impossible.
That’s the story behind today’s RESPECT Check.

While the mental health care of city workers was crumbling under Emblem’s illegal ghost network during the pandemic … UFT is being infused with millions into its Welfare Fund and MAP program.
The UFT and DC 37 Welfare Funds now sit with over a billion dollars in reserve due to the raiding and depletion of the city’s Healthcare Stabilization Fund beyond its intended purpose.
While @uft members and city workers and retirees continue to more out of pocket

Today my office has released a major new report on student enrollment in NYC.
We found that k-12 enrollment in our public schools has fallen by 187k since 2013, with a projected decline of an additional 128k students by 2034.
As total enrollment declines, NYCPS is serving a student population with growing needs. The number of students with disabilities is increasing. In the most recent school year, approximately 73% of students were in poverty and 14% were homeless or living in temporary housing.
Our report finds the drop in enrollment is driven by declining births and families with children leaving NYC, with a particularly notable drop in public-school enrollment as students transition from elementary to middle school.
These trends have massive implications for our schools that we have only barely begin to grapple with. My hope is that this report will spur a long overdue conversation about what the era of falling student enrollment means for NYC, and what we can do to reverse or slow it. 🧵

New: NYC will pay the teachers’ union $8.7 million for “building positive nurturing environments” during the COVID pandemic in 2020-2022 under a RETROACTIVE contract approved last night by the Panel for Educational Policy. The DOE refused to specify what labor the UFT provided, or explain why the city is funding it SIX YEARS LATER.
Agenda item #3:
Interesting pick. Strong labor history past. Her relationship with @NYCSchools poses a challenging dynamic with @UFT.
@LVladeck apparently is the great-granddaughter of Baruch Chaney Vladek - Belarusian-born Jewish American labor leader, journalist, socialist politician, and civic reform.

Socialist leader, labor organizer,
NYC councilman

Stephen Charney Vladeck
Labor and civil rights attorney

Former administrator of Medicare and Medicaid under President Clinton

Yup and when Weisberg ran the SCA board it riddled with corruption & was accountable to no one except him and Eric
Adams. Good try. susanedelman2.substack.com/p…
Who is in charge of education in New York State, anyway? It's a really hard question to answer — and therein lies a huge problem, writes Daniel Weisberg. vitalcitynyc.org/make-the-go…
The Mulgrew corruption, cronyism and nepotism runs deep at @uft also
Meghan Mulgrew, daughter of teachers union prez Mike Mulgrew, used personal texts to discuss issues as senior adviser at @NYCDCAS because she "wished to keep the communications private," a co-worker said.
“Hey didn’t want this in teams,” Mulgrew began a message, referring to Microsoft Teams, which archives all content as official records.
Such messages by Mulgrew and other DCAS managers appear to violate rules meant to ensure that discussions of city business are preserved as official records subject to public disclosure, @THECITYNY reports.

Since @nycretirees are being ignored, can @JoannAriola32 @Lynn4NYC @SpeakerMenin find out why in the new NYCEPPO plan calling 911 & getting an FDNY ambulance is out of network?
Or was this another secret the MLC leadership kept from you? Att: Health & Civil Service committees.
@ShirleyAldebol @tiffany_caban @JimGennaro @TyHankerson @CMCrystalHudson @CMMercedesCD46 @frankmorano @ChrisMarteNYC @HarveyforNY @CarlMichaelW @CnDelarosa @SimchaFelderNY
This puts the employee & retiree holding the expense of the ambulance bill. Why is FDNY out of network?
Ps: if anyone in OLR listens, ask them why they aren’t letting Medicare Retirees know the premiums, drug formulary and drug costs of the part D plan BEFORE open enrollment- and why they won’t let us buy a cheaper plan on the marketplace and keep younger dependents on the city plan.
Asking for 250,000 members who served.
Hello 911? This is an emergency. Please send an ambulance that is not from FDNY so I don't go into medical debt. #NYCEPPO

Today, Gov. Hochul announced that New York State will opt into the Trump administration's voucher program. Giving up local control of public education to the federal government through this scheme is a failure of leadership. Gov. Hochul will bear the responsibility, but our students, educators, and families will bear the price. The UFT is disappointed in this decision and we will continue to stand with parents, educators and public school supporters to do what we can to roll back this policy and protect our classrooms. Full statement: uft.org/news/press-releases/…

ALT The image features the UFT logo at the top against a blue background. Below is a quote from Michael Mulgrew, UFT President, criticizing the transfer of local education control to the federal government through the Trump administration's private school voucher scheme. The quote highlights concerns about leadership and the impact on students, educators, and families.

Neither of these bonuses makes any sense. it’s the law and @ZohranKMamdani is the @nycmayor and has mayoral control. Just develop a real plan and get it done.

Many NYC principals make more than $200K a year. Now they get a bonus up to $10K for complying with a state law.
"if the city asks school leaders to take on the difficult work of reorganizing programs, staffing, and scheduling to meet the class size mandate, that work and responsibility must be acknowledged” --and compensated, their union says.

Bizarre –1st bonuses for teachers assigned to classes that don’t comply w/class size law &now bonuses for principals if they do? What if they don’t have the space – which DOE has done nothing to provide. None of this makes sense. NYSED should step in.

Undoubtedly there’s a para shortage in @NYCSchools due to the lack of a living wage b/c of decades of @uft and the @NYCMayorsOffice not delivering for them. But can we get the MESSAGING straight @SpeakerMenin and UFT? Is it 8k or 1k?

WHY NOT TAKE THE WIN?
Mayor to NYT: yes let’s give paras *permanent* raises through collective bargaining.
Mulgrew: Let’s instead give paras a one-time bonus through Speaker Menin’s legislation, to start a war with the new mayor prior to the beginning of contract negotiations.
