This is why AI-based fiction and art are harmful. Every reader, music lover, movie buff, and art fan has experienced that moment of gazing at someone else’s creation and feeling seen. Those moments inspire us, and lead us to become writers, poets, musicians, actors or directors or producers, painters, sculptors, designers — all dreamers, all inspired by someone else sharing their dream. AI can’t produce that. AI doesn’t dream.

Literary journals will legitimately send you a rejection letter claiming they have to decline “many wonderful submissions” and tell you not to take it personally, then 3 weeks later post that their submission inbox is empty. Here’s a thought: you’re a strictly online journal not even paying writers. Get the fuck off your high horse and accept more submissions.

I do not want this internet. I do not want software telling me what to know. I do not want the information I receive to be the product of theft. I do not want every search query to create a thousand saved points of data about me. I do not want those saved points sold to companies I haven’t knowingly done business with (or even to those I have, if I’m not asked to consent to every data point sold, every time). I do not want the government buying up that data and using AI to weave data points from every search and every site I visit together with my health insurance, auto insurance, bank records, voting records, tax records — and annotating it all along the way with the records of my family members, people I may know, neighbors, groups I belong to, and social media posts (including this one). I do not want all of that appended with photos of me taken from license plate cameras and facial recognition scans from traffic cameras and doorbell cameras and security cameras and ATM cameras and the cameras in health care offices, government buildings, and who knows where else. Where are the legal restraints? Where are the protections? Why is our privacy the new commodity being strip-mined and sold off? Who thinks that’s acceptable? Why are we forced to allow it? Why has this gotten so out of control in just the past couple of years? Who benefits — because it’s sure not us? And why do so many people forget the answers to these things the second they step into the voting booth?
