One of Thiel’s best insights is that companies that are true monopolies will do everything to avoid telling the public that. They will minimise themselves. They will tell us that they are not a monopoly to avoid scrutiny. On the other hand, companies that aren’t, or don’t have defensible markets, will do everything to project the opposite—to brand themselves publicly as monopoly-like powers.
A lot to reflect here in the OpenAI/Anthropic narratives. It’s not exactly the same, but the permanent underclass language, the grandiosity, the ‘AI will take all your jobs’ seems close to Thiel’s second category. What’s frightening is how far they’ve taken it, seemingly without considering the weight of their words, and how it’s now putting their lives at risk. I felt Sam’s pain reading that blog post. It’s especially sad to consider that, if Thiel is right, they’ve frightened the public into taking these kinds of actions for a marketing lie.

It's amazing how everyone is claiming to be topped out on novelty. Dead to the world. "Nothing ever happens." You deserve to fall in love or something. You deserve a million dollars falling into your lap. A flower will bloom in front of your doorstep and shock you into silence.
Insane that you need to be an ‘accredited investor’ (>1m net worth or >200k salary for 2 years) to angel invest but any Tom, Dick, and Harry can go bet his life savings on polymarket or drunk at the casino with no questions asked. Sorry poor man, only the bad investments for you!
That the only way is via equity crowdfunding sites, and that those are often the worst opportunities, is a serious impediment to what capitalism is meant to facilitate. If we don’t deem it necessary to protect ‘unsophisticated’ investors from the casino then I can’t think of a good reason we’d need to protect them from any kind of legal investment opportunity. If buyer and seller is willing, then uneven interference simply creates the worst of both worlds where those born poorest can only access the worst or rigged opportunities.

I wrote an essay about the imminent death of all science.
Go read it, it's fun!

It is darkly humorous to me how few Westerners yet recognize, after the magnitude and multitude of 21st century object lessons, that nominal representative governance guarantees psyops will constitute the memetic water in which we swim.

Yes. There was so much to learn about the intersection of complex adaptive systems, evolutionary theory, cryptography, and game theory—but instead it largely collapsed into a low time preference casino / grift engine.
That alone is a lesson more still need to internalize.
Feel like a broken record saying this and understand that SF/tech runs on a kind of ‘necessary hubris,’ that we couldn’t have the highs without the lows, but could we at least get better at distinguishing zero sum from positive sum players? Elon vs Leopold, the builders from the gamblers?
On an Air France flight with Starlink right now and what an epic achievement this is! Thank you to the builders. Your hubris is tolerable.
A good way to keep expanding your brainpower is to always try think of the answer to your question or problem yourself first, and then ask the models or experts etc. even if you have no idea, just try and Think about what it could be, then seek the right answer externally and adjust. Over time, you’ll notice your accuracy improving. Many things are analogous to other things you already know.

I look for signs of
- mutual respect
- initiative (person acknowledges, apologises, attempts repair without being prompted)
- joy (can yall still laugh together)
- change (easing out of unhealthy/hurtful patterns)
- communication (do yall actually talk and actually listen)

this is an obvious take but the optimal amount of anti-ai-safety sentiment floating around in the public sphere is not zero, just as is the optimal amount of pro-ai-safety sentiment. just make sure to love your neighbor and we'll all end up somewhere fine

Tucker Carlson arriving at leftist positions through sheer resentment at least offers further proof of the way all leftist positions are generated.
I find it kind of weird that I’m the most anti-explicit-feminist-me-too whatever supporter and yet when anyone asks me for a maths m/physics/engineering person all my Rolodex are women
In Sicily. Road rules non existent, just like, put your indicator and go, much like a video game. Someone dropped a full can of paint on the road which I drove over and covered the rental car in, disaster, looked for a car wash. Guy does a great job. Relieved, I get back in the car, noticed he’s also consumed all my gluten free biscuits 🤌
