President Isaias Afwerki, 2000: Peace Is Not Surrender
“War is bullshit. Anyone talking about war these days is bluffing.”
In 2000, as #Eritrea and #Ethiopia stood amid the devastation of war, President Isaias Afwerki delivered a message that remains relevant today: military confrontation cannot provide a lasting solution to political disputes.
He warned that skirmishes and further fighting would solve nothing. His call was to defuse the conflict, settle the border through arbitration or demarcation, and restore relations between the two countries.
There is a fundamental principle behind those words: peace is possible between neighbours, but only when sovereignty is respected.
Eritrea's pursuit of peaceful relations with its neighbours cannot mean accepting threats, coercion, or claims over territory that belongs to another sovereign state. Nor can a nation's desire for maritime access justify treating another country's land or coastline as a right to be claimed by force.
The peoples of the Horn of Africa have already paid dearly for war. They deserve trade instead of threats, cooperation instead of confrontation, and borders that unite neighbouring economies without erasing national sovereignty.
The lesson of 2000 is not that #Eritrea should compromise its sovereignty for the sake of quiet. It is that disputes must be resolved through law, diplomacy, and respect for established borders before political ambition turns into another tragedy.
Peace is not surrender. Neighbourhood is not ownership. And sovereignty is not negotiable under threat.
That is the difference between seeking a peaceful settlement and demanding that another nation pay the price for your ambitions.

The Prosperity Party under Abiy Ahmed is perhaps the most fragile political party ever to lead #Ethiopia, leaving it highly vulnerable to a coup d’état or even a popular uprising. One of Abiy’s ministers has reportedly remarked, “When dealing with Abiy, you never know whether you are swimming or sinking.”
The Dergu under Menghistu Hailemariam managed to establish itself among the population through terror and its Workers’ Party, while the EPRDF enjoyed a broad popular base and commanded a military and security apparatus capable of controlling the population. Both regimes also benefited from substantial international backing, largely for ideological and political reasons.
Looking at Ethiopia under the Prosperity Party led by Abiy Ahmed today, the picture is starkly different. Not only does his government lack meaningful support among majority sections of the #Oromo, #Amhara and #Tigrayan populations, but the military is battered by prolonged warfare, the economy is fragile and teetering on the brink, and his principal external backer, the UAE, is highly transactional in its relationships.
Meanwhile, the population appears to be just one triggering incident away from a popular uprising.
All of #Ethiopia’s neighbouring countries are either suspicious of Abiy’s government or Abiy is openly hostile towards them.
It is therefore difficult to escape the conclusion that #Ethiopia, under Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party, is exceptionally vulnerable to either a coup d’état or a popular uprising.
The question is what is the triggering incident. Because the people who are disgusted by Abiy are too many to imagine.
#ERITREANS EVERYWHERE: THE MEKETE IS OUR RESPONSIBILITY!
Distance cannot weaken our bond with Eritrea, and borders cannot separate us from our national duty.
Every YPFDJ member, every Eritrean at home and abroad, has a role to play: defend our sovereignty, preserve our heritage, strengthen our unity, and contribute to the future of our homeland.
Mekete is more than a call. It is a commitment. A duty. A movement of unity and national responsibility.
Wherever we stand, Eritrea remains in our hearts. Wherever we live, we have a part to play.
Our homeland. Our people. Our responsibility.

PRESIDENT ISAIAS AFWERKI: AFRICA MUST DO ITS HOMEWORK
“ Africa should do its homework.” President Isaias Afwerki
At the Russia–Africa Summit, President Isaias delivered a blunt message: Africa cannot build its future by endlessly blaming others while neglecting the responsibility to address its own challenges.
Partnerships matter. Cooperation matters. But no external power can do Africa’s homework for it.
The continent must confront its problems, strengthen its own capacity and mobilize its resources. International partnerships should support that journey not become an excuse to postpone it.
Africa’s future cannot be outsourced. Its challenges demand African solutions, African responsibility and the determination to act.
The world may offer a hand, but Africa must decide where it wants to go and do the work to get there.

PRESIDENT ISAIAS AFWERKI: “SOVEREIGNTY IS THE NAME OF THE GAME.”
No nation can speak of partnership while violating another’s sovereignty. No one can preach cooperation while undermining independence. And no lasting peace can be built on disrespect for territorial integrity.
President Isaias Afwerki’s message is fundamental: sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity are not bargaining chips. They are the foundations upon which every meaningful relationshipbilateral or multilateral must stand.
Trade without respect is exploitation. Partnership without equality is domination. Diplomacy without sovereignty is an empty promise.
Respect the nation. Respect its borders. Respect its right to choose its own path.
Because before investment comes trust. Before integration comes respect. And before any genuine partnership, there must be sovereignty.
🇪🇷 Eritrea’s position is clear: peace and partnership, yes but never at the expense of sovereignty.

#Eritrea’s Coveted Geopolitical Location and Irreplaceable Strategic Role in the Red Sea and the Horn of Africa

*"...Eritrea’s geopolitical significance and strategic role is deeply rooted in its geography, history, and the resilience of its people and statehood. From the earliest human migrations and the development of ancient civilizations to the emergence of the modern international system, the territory of present-day Eritrea has occupied an important position at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East, and the wider world. Its strategic importance, already considerable in antiquity (part of this history is covered in the book ‘Periplus of the Erythraean Sea’), has assumed even greater significance in the modern era...".
*"...For countries such as Eritrea, the central challenge is to safeguard sovereignty and national security while navigating an increasingly contested geopolitical environment. The ability to withstand external pressure and maintain an independent foreign policy is consequently a significant dimension of the country’s regional position".
*"...Against this background, Eritrea’s self-reliant stance; independent foreign policy; resistance to alien/colonial occupation, sanctions and external pressures are important elements in understanding its contemporary geopolitical posture. The country’s political trajectory has been shaped by a determination to defend its sovereignty and preserve its independence under difficult regional and international circumstances".
*"...Eritrea’s contribution to regional stability must therefore be assessed in terms of both its strategic position and its conduct. Its constructive engagement with neighboring countries, solidarity with countries and peoples facing complex nation building challenges, support for peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and opposition to destabilizing external interference all contribute to a more secure regional environment".

President ISAIAS AFWERKI: THE RED SEA’S FUTURE MUST BE SHAPED BY ITS COASTAL STATES
“The Red Sea, the Horn of Africa, the Nile Basin and the Gulf”
President Isaias Afwerki sees these not as isolated flashpoints, but as interconnected regions whose future demands dialogue, cooperation and shared responsibility.
His message is bigger than maritime access: no blockades, no fragmentation, no imposed solutions. Build regional mechanisms where nations have a voice and peace comes before development.
The Red Sea is not a prize to be claimed by force. It is a shared strategic reality that demands respect for sovereignty, regional consensus and cooperation.
Not division, but dialogue. Not domination, but cooperation. Not another crisis, but a regional future built by the nations that call it home.

President ISAIAS AFWERKI: A MULTIPOLAR WORLD MUST MAKE ROOM FOR AFRICA AND RUSSIA
At the #Moscow International Security Forum, President Isaias Afwerki delivered a message that goes beyond geopolitics: partnership cannot flourish when one side is constantly being contained, weakened or excluded.
For Africa, multipolarity is not simply about changing who holds power. It is about creating the space to choose partners, exchange ideas and pursue development without external barriers dictating the limits.
President Isaias stressed that Russia must be allowed to make its contribution, while Africa must also do its part to create the conditions for meaningful cooperation.
Summits are milestones. But the real measure is what they make possible: stronger partnerships, greater economic opportunity and tangible progress for African peoples.
A multipolar world means more than many centres of power. It means a world where Africa has the freedom to shape its own future.

Good read:
#UNICEF needs $401.5 million to reach around 8.9 million people in #Ethiopia in 2026, including 6.3 million children. Yet as of June, only 19% of that requirement had been met, leaving an 81% funding gap.
