El-Sayed may not be an exceptional electoral performer, but he is unusually intelligent for a senator
I've been in politics for a quarter century. It's hard to express how staggering it is to see a conversation like this on corporate US media. The Morning Joe panel gobsmacked by the directness of @AbdulElSayed's points.

Here's a wild idea in politics: what if the nice guys win, and the mean guys lose? (gift link below).

loved this smart, wide-ranging @mbolotnikova piece on what we can learn from Sweden's factory-built housing

"We should make it hard for the government to build anything because otherwise it might build bad things" isn't an especially progressive governing philosophy imo

Feels premature to say that the Trump Era is over. But the Nothing Matters Era is. The political arena really has shifted, not just in the last year but the last ten. We have agency. We can work, we can strategize, and we can build. We aren't helpless, many things are possible.

I am marveling at the level of turnout effects this election. I am a known turnout skeptic, but Republicans do seem to have lived the nightmare of "your base just straight up stays home"!! Obvi we'll know more as more data comes in, but wow.
According to @davidshor, it's less important for candidates to be perceived as "moderate" than for them to be perceived as in touch with -- and focused on -- ordinary people's economic concerns.
(Though being seen as "moderate" also helps)

"The day before the Iran war, Donald Trump had a 49% approval rating on gas prices. Within a week, it was 33%."
According to @davidshor, Republicans were on track for a normal-sized midterm defeat --- right until Trump launched the Iran War. vox.com/politics/509476/midt…

Here's a fun one.
Based on the count so far, Democratic candidates for Senate did nearly 5 points better (in margin) relative to 2024 in counties where Trump held a rally in Oct/Nov, compared to directly adjacent counties in the same state.

I would argue that they may have even fared better than that without the Iran war. On Feb 28, gas prices were dropping as we're interest rates, that trend could have continued and they could have arrived at Nov with inflation under control, low gas prices and rates, and a market the boomed further. Colossal own goal.

The GOP had a massive money advantage. I asked
@davidshor why it bought the party so few votes.
His answer: Campaign donations are helpful. But the freedom to ignore rich weirdos' preferences is priceless.
