Our new paper just out in @NatureNeuro covered by @alzforum 👇👇👇
Glia team up in #Alzheimersdisease: astrocyte reactivity rises with amyloid and tau, though only when riled-up microglia are in the mix. @mcgillu @ufrgsnoticias ow.ly/yqYu50XoLyT

Excited to share our new work now out in Nature Neuroscience!! We use a whole-brain framework to show that aging and Alzhiemer's disease affect the brain's functional organization along completely separate axes. Paper and thread below 👇
The first paper from my PhD is out in @NatureNeuro!
Aging and Alzheimer's disease both reshape how the brain communicates. But not in the same way: aging vs AD related alterations follow two distinct axes of brain organization

Two p-tau217-positive people can decline at different rates. In our new six-cohort study (n=3,505), those also GFAP-positive had 62% faster annual CDR-SB progression. GFAP may improve p-tau217 risk stratification. rdcu.be/yuJARTuqxBga

Excited to share our new paper. Using the HEAD study data, @guilhermepovala showed that low-dose CT can reliably replace MRI for regional tau PET quantification across tau tracers—simplifying PET processing without compromising accuracy.

How can culture help us understand brain health and dementia?
At @FENSorg Forum 2026 in Barcelona, join us for the special event “Brain Health & Intersubjectivity: The Brain Film Fest.”
We will explore how culture, cinema, storytelling, emotions, identity, and lived experience can open new ways of understanding brain health, ageing, and dementia.
I will have the pleasure of chairing a conversation with Elena Subirà i Roca from the Brain Film Fest, Salvador Macip from Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center, and @erzimmer from Hospital Moinhos de Vento and UFRGS.

Brilliant @guilhermepovala! A landmark work! Congrats to @LabPascoal and team!
Tau PET is central to Alzheimer's diagnosis and trial selection. But does tracer choice matter? The HEAD study set out to answer that. 682 participants, both Flortaucipir and MK6240, across the Alzheimer's spectrum. Out today in @TheLancet.

Hope can emerge in the most unexpected circumstances. This past year has been one of the most challenging for me, both scientifically and personally. But ReDLat2 has just been awarded by the @NIH and @NIHAging. Over the next 5 years, the project will bring together 12 sites across Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru) and the United States (@UCSFmac) to investigate how environmental × genetic interactions shape aging and dementia, focusing on Alzheimer’s disease and #FTLD. We will examine the role of aggregate and individual-level social exposomes (Aim 1) characterize biological signatures (genetic, epigenetic and plasma markers) across familial and sporadic presentations (Aim 2) and develop computational models of exposome × biological interactions that shape multimodal aging clocks (Aim 3) Deeply honored to lead this initiative together with @durananiotz, @YokoyamaLabUCSF, & @brucemillerucsf. Grateful to the @NIH and @NIHAging, our Program Officer @Maryam84gh, the @ReDLat_Dementia program manager @godoymeugenia and team, the @BrainlatUAI workforce and especially all the site investigators who make this collaboration possible. @lttakada @aslachevskych @AdolfoMGarcia @Elisa_Resende_ @avilafunes @nanosanta @NiltonCustodio8
Many opportunities ahead for postdocs, clinicians, and scientists. Stay tuned.
