“Keep politics out of my sports.” It’s a phrase we hear all the time, but it oversimplifies the relationship between sports and the world around us. I recently had the opportunity to interview Abdul El-Sayed, and I wanted to ask him about was his experience as a collegiate athlete. Specifically, I was interested in his perspective on the intersection of sports and politics, and what he learned from being in a locker room surrounded by teammates from different backgrounds and beliefs. I understand why people want sports to be an escape from politics, but the reality is that throughout history, sports and politics have been deeply intertwined. From breaking racial barriers to fighting for equality and civil rights, athletes have played a pivotal role in pushing society toward meaningful social change. Having spent much of my life in locker rooms, I believe there's something uniquely powerful about bringing people together who might disagree on what’s best for the country, but still have to trust one another and work toward a common goal. Sports have always been about more than just the game. And sometimes, the impact they have beyond the field is far greater than anything that happens on it. Here's a portion of our conversation. @AbdulElSayed

One year. There’s a lot to think about these days, but there’s not a day that I haven’t thought about you. I miss you.
Laney passed away in my arms tonight at 17 years old. I’ve never been an adult without her, but the commitment I made to keep her safe, happy, and fed was a huge part of me growing up. Almost Two decades with you just wasn’t long enough. I’ll miss you Laneybear.

You’d literally have to pay me to get me to post my college personal statement on Twitter. NOBODY is getting my grandma’s chicken noodle soup recipe for free.

Thought we were going to lose Laney last weekend. People stopped by, said their goodbyes, and gave their love, but by Monday, she was better and walking around! 17 in May if we can keep pain down, comfort up. So blessed to have more time with my girl🐺

I’m sorry I couldn’t properly lead to this beautiful tribute the @CollegeGameDay put together. Really wanted to thank all of you for the avalanche of love and support you’ve shown Ben. It gives me and my family such comfort knowing how he impacted so many peoples lives around the country. He was a beautiful and loving soul.

I truly believe that all people are capable of performing each and every job on this planet. Things take different degrees of preparation, patience, and will, but incompetence is temporary and not a term with any degree of finality. Passion, integrity & honesty above all else

So grateful to celebrate 16 years with Laney this week. She's had some tough issues lately, but I'm super encouraged by our last visit to the vet. Modern meds work almost immediately to treat many issues that commonly present in senior dogs and she's got a new lease on life today

The Esports World Cup is on the horizon. I’m seeing loans, letters of intent, unusual deal structures, and a growing focus on prize money + rev splits (in game items, merch etc). It’s more important than ever to have competent legal counsel, a voice, and a fair deal

Success isn’t only measured by your life’s accomplishments. It’s also measured by the number of people you inspire. Be that light, you’ll give others the confidence to do the same. There is work to be done in your community. Go be the change you want to see in the world.

Time has just kinda stopped since my 16 year old dog collapsed and seized today. She’s a little confused and glassy-eyed, but she’s up now and mostly mobile with an appointment set at the vet. It’s hard not to get ahead of myself here, but idk guys I don’t think I can do this yet

You want people to be themselves & to be “real.” When they give you real, you call it ego. When they give you kindness, and positivity. You call it fake. When they do giveaways, you call it disingenuous. When they work hard and get the things they want, you call it “handed.” When they make a mistake you label their character. Truth is, some of you aren’t in the position you want because you could never actually handle the things that come with trying to inspire people. Y’all already been crying.
Iv been streaming for 5/6 years now and no one speaks more truth than @Big_E . yall want freedom of speech and BigE does exactly that and now hes the bad guy. Yall just dont like the truth. No one cares about your crying. Grow up. Stream for you. Streaming is not easy.

many of us have dedicated over 20 years to growing our love for competitive gaming into professional esports. to fill arenas and provide a sustainable career for the next generation. seeing so much of it squandered by corporate malpractice and failing leadership is maddening
