Remove barriers, promote skills and youth mobility, foster more cooperation to support growth: this is what competitiveness means on both sides of the Atlantic.
And it was at the heart of our discussions today at the Canada-EU Business Forum, with Prime Minister @MarkJCarney, President @vonderLeyen and European and Canadian business leaders.

Yet another cruel and devastating series of Russian strikes against civilians in Ukraine.
My condolences to President @ZelenskyyUa and the people of Ukraine following Russia’s drone attack on Dnipro railway station, as well as attacks in residential neighbourhoods in Chernihiv and Kremenchuk.
The EU will continue to increase the pressure on Russia and to support Ukraine until a just and lasting peace is achieved.
We call on all our international partners to do the same.
I have been informed by Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, of her intention to step down from her role on 7 February 2027. I respectfully acknowledge her decision.
I would like to thank Madame @Lagarde for her dedication as President of the @ecb since November 2019. Throughout her mandate, she has led the European Central Bank with a strong sense of duty and responsibility. Europe has been well served by her leadership in uncertain times and her unwavering commitment to the European project. Through a global pandemic, a war in Europe, energy crises and inflation shocks, she has provided a steady and determined stewardship, helping to safeguard stability and the resilience of the euro area.
To ensure a smooth transition to the next leadership of the ECB, the process for the appointment of her successor will be initiated today and will proceed without delay, with a view to a timely decision by the European Council acting in its euro area composition, in accordance with the procedure set out in Article 283 (2) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union.

The European flags in front of our building are flying at half-mast as a sign of solidarity following the tragic train collision in Toledo, Spain.
Our thoughts are with the victims, the injured, their families and the people of Spain.
Ravi d’être à Montréal pour le 21ème sommet UE-Canada!
Together with @markjcarney and @vonderleyen, we will open a new chapter in our partnership.
More prosperity. More security. More opportunities.
For Europeans, for Canadians.
For our future.

Všechno nejlepší ke Dni vzniku samostatného československého státu, Česká republiko!
I just had a good phone conversation with Dr Ilija Srdanović.
I congratulated him on the Student List’s election victory in Serbia.
The priority now is to establish Parliament and the new government without delay, through a peaceful transition and in full respect of the election results.
Serbia’s place is in the European Union. We stand ready to support its European path, with a clear focus on the reforms the Serbian people have called for: the rule of law, the fight against corruption and media freedom.
The war in Yemen is intensifying, deepening the humanitarian crisis and affecting millions of people.
I just spoke with @PresidentRashad al-Alimi to reaffirm the EU’s full solidarity with and support for the Government of Yemen and its efforts to restore peace and stability.
I conveyed the EU’s strong condemnation of Houthi attacks within Yemen, against Saudi Arabia and on shipping in the Red Sea.
We call on the Houthis to immediately cease their attacks, de-escalate and return to negotiations under UN auspices.
Only an inclusive political solution can bring lasting peace to Yemen.
O povo brasileiro falou.
Today, the people of Serbia turned out in record numbers to shape their country’s future.
Congratulations to the Student List on its victory in the parliamentary elections.
We stand ready to support reforms on the rule of law, media freedom, the fight against corruption and strong democratic institutions, and to work together to build Serbia’s future in the European Union.
@vonderleyen
Thank you dear @magyarpeterMP for the invitation to join you in Budapest to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
The Hungarians’ deep yearning for independence and self-determination found renewed expression in 1989, when Hungarians were pioneers in removing the Iron Curtain.
It also guided Hungary’s decision to join the European Union in 2004 - a crucial step in the reunification of Europe.
The courage of those who rose up in 1956 continues to inspire all who cherish freedom, democracy, and the right of free peoples to self-determination.
The EU stands in full solidarity with Romania following this morning’s attack on a vessel off its coast. I express my sincere solidarity with the victims’ families and extend my heartfelt condolences.
I commend the Romanian Coast Guard for its ongoing search-and-rescue efforts.
Attacks off the coasts of EU Member States in the Black Sea are increasing as a consequence of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. Such attacks are unacceptable and must stop.
The EU is united in its opposition to Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine and its escalating hybrid campaigns.
On this anniversary, we honour the courage of those who stood up against oppression in 1956.
May their legacy continue to inspire Hungary and all of Europe: to defend democracy, uphold our common values, and build a Union stronger than ever. nitter.cf/i/broadcasts/1wxWjlNkj…
It was my pleasure to welcome President of Viet Nam, Tô Lâm, to Brussels.
President Tô Lâm’s visit today follows my visit to Hanoi in January of this year, when we elevated the relationship between the EU and Viet Nam to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership”.
In an uncertain world, the EU and Viet Nam are proving that reliable and predictable partnerships matter.
In spite of our geographical distance, we share the same vision to defend multilateralism and uphold the international rules-based order.
We are now focused on developing our partnership further and investing in each other’s future: on green transition, critical raw materials, technology and innovation, strategic infrastructure and other sectors.
Congratulations to the International Criminal Court and its officials on receiving the Sakharov Prize.
This award sends a powerful message to the world: Europe stands firmly behind international law, the fight against impunity, and accountability for the most serious international crimes.
The EU will continue to support the @IntlCrimCourt.
There can be no lasting peace without justice and accountability.
