BREAKING: @SierraSpaceCo's Dream Chaser has received a Re-entry licence from the @FAAnews. This authorizes a return to Vandenberg Space Force Base from Earth orbit. Re-entry, however, requires Dream Chaser to launch, and when (or if) that happens is a very open question. 📷 @SierraSpaceCo

I picked up a book about the space shuttle Challenger at the thrift store yesterday. It goes over the construction of the vehicle, every mission it flew, every payload it deployed, every astronaut who flew aboard and, of course, the incident.

(Volume up for this one⬆️ ) “Hail hitting the cabin sound” is not the most pleasant experience as a pax OTD in 2022, Latam Flight 1325, an A320, was hit by hail over Asuncion (Paraguay). Jet landed safely, but damage from the hail caused damage on the nose, windshield and engine.

JUST IN: China has successfully launched SIX new remote-sensing satellites into orbit, expanding its growing Earth-observation infrastructure. A Long March-4B rocket lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on October 24, deploying three Yaogan-53 satellites and three Yaogan-56 satellites into their designated orbits. China says the spacecraft will support scientific research, resource surveys, agricultural monitoring and disaster response. However, the broader Yaogan program is also associated with Chinese military intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities, according to U.S. government assessments. The precise surveillance capabilities of the newly launched satellites have not been disclosed. The mission marks the 673rd flight of China’s Long March rocket family, underscoring the continued expansion of the country’s orbital infrastructure.

Despite the FAA certification of the Boeing 737 MAX 10, Boeing still has no direct equivalent to the Airbus A321XLR, which is the world's longest-range single-aisle narrowbody airliner at 4,700 NM, compared to the 3,100 NM of the 737-10. The next-generation replacement for the 737 could be Boeing’s answer.

On 5 Dec 1956, a Snark missile launched from Cape Canaveral, went rogue, and flew 3,500 miles toward Brazil's Amazon jungle. Newspapers had a field day with headlines, Soviet sabotage theories, and Snark puns. Enjoy these period newspaper clippings! @ccspacemuseum

The Boeing 747 was designed to be cargo-friendly from day one. In the 1960s, Boeing engineers expected supersonic airliners to dominate passenger travel by the 1970s. They believed subsonic aircraft like the 747 would eventually make more economic sense as freighters, so they designed the 747 with cargo operations in mind, including its distinctive nose that could hinge upward on freighter versions. They got the timing and the supersonic prediction wrong, but the long-term outcome right. Supersonic airliners never took over (awaiting for Concorde re-birth). Meanwhile, the 747 became one of the most iconic and successful freighters in aviation history. Ever used the wrong formula and still got the right answer? That's what happened here.

There's a little change in the color on the tress and a white Fort Knox C-12 Huron makes it just a little prettier. They have been working the airspace around KOWB this week pretty hard. #aviation #avgeek #usarmy #c12 #huron

SpaceX's Starfall capsule flies again on Bandwagon-5, now targeting Tuesday 20 October. It's a return ticket from orbit. About 2 hours 48 minutes after liftoff it separates from the rocket, and later it comes back down with what it carries. It can bring home up to 1,000 kg. Most things sent to orbit never come back. Starfall can wait up there as long as needed, then come home with whatever was made or tested on board.

Data Patterns says a programme slipped 18+ months, then got a 6-month extension, with 2 more sought, because the customer's inspection team didn't turn up. Inspection exists so you follow process always, not just when someone's watching 😂 Any guesses on customer 😂😂

In 1972, Jean Boulet broke the world altitude record for a helicopter (which still stands today). At the controls of an SA 315B “Lama”, he reached a record altitude of 12,442 metres above Istres. At that altitude, the cockpit was completely iced over, with temperature at -62°C.
