Stepping back in time with the legendary Heathkit HW-5400⚡️

Introduced between 1983 and 1984, this HF transceiver holds a massive piece of radio history: it was the very last major HF base station kit ever designed and produced by Heathkit before they officially bowed out of the amateur radio market.
Unlike its iconic tube-based predecessors (like the legendary HW-101), the HW-5400 went fully solid-state and microprocesssor-controlled.
But let’s talk about hardcore DIY: with a staggering 15 printed circuit boards, assembling this beast pushed the limits of the average kit-builder. In fact, things got so complex that in later production batches, Heathkit actually started shipping parts of the radio pre-assembled!
(Honestly, we should totally organize a speed-assembly competition and send the winner straight to the Guinness World Records 😂)

České Radiokomunikace nechaly odstřelit dva 355 metrů vysoké stožáry vysílače v Liblicích u Českého Brodu, které byly téměř 50 let nejvyššími stavbami v Česku. Firma pro ně po ukončení vysílání nenašla další využití ani kupce schopného zajistit jejich opravu a bezpečný provoz.

New images captured by SMILE, a joint mission between ESA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, show the entire auroral oval surrounding Earth’s North Pole in ultraviolet light, a global view that has not been seen in this way for around 18 years.
The video also shows the ring becoming brighter during a geomagnetic substorm, when stored energy in the magnetosphere is suddenly released and particles are accelerated toward the polar regions.
As these particles enter the upper atmosphere, they excite atmospheric gases and produce the auroral glow.
Observing the aurora from space makes it possible to study it as a complete, dynamic structure rather than only from individual locations on the ground.
