Status has raised $17M in seed and Series A funding led by @AbstractVC, @generalcatalyst and @usv to let anyone step inside their favorite stories, become famous, and live a million different lives.
We quietly launched Status last year and grew to over 1 million users in 19 days - making us the fastest growing AI app since ChatGPT.
But we hit a (predictable) snag - the app was incredibly expensive to run. How do you serve millions of users without degrading the product with a cheap LLM?
So the team locked in: we rebuilt the whole experience, and our technical bets paid off. Our users now spend 35 minutes on average to (90 minutes each day for power users!), and millions of characters and worlds have been created. All by our users.
The next frontier of entertainment is mobile-first and deeply personal. Traditional mobile games take years to build and rarely stick. TV shows are fleeting in the age of streaming. Status is different. It is not a game you finish, it is a world you can live in.
Status is a new category entirely: Immersive Social Entertainment, and we believe strongly that it is the next great entertainment paradigm. We’ve 10x’d to millions in annual revenue in Q1 2026, we're just getting started.
On Status, you can be anyone.
it is gauche but muse or grokbot would gain so much more mindshare/dau if they marketed themselves as a personal agent to vent to/get advice from
i bet a large portion of consumer chatgpt DAUs aren’t even people talking to their AIs like google but talking to them like people and ranting to them about their life

Your AI agent can find anyone on the internet. It has no idea who can actually get you to them.
Until now.
Meet Gigi: the trusted network that gives agents access to people.
That investor you've been dying to meet. The engineer you'd hire tomorrow. The dream customer you can't get in front of. Chances are, someone in your extended network knows them. Gigi finds out who.
Your agent can now search your network, ask the agents of people you trust to search theirs, and find real warm paths to the people you want to reach.
All without exposing anyone's contacts. And without reading a single email or message.
Your network is no longer who you know. It's who your agent can get you to.
Think of one person you wish you knew. Ask Gigi to find your way in. Link in the comments👇
my sister is a freshman in college
me: what do the other kids think about ai
my sister: oh everyone hates it
me: but are they using it…?
my sister: well duh everyone is. everyone is on chat/gemini/claude for their classes
stated preference ≠ revealed preference
core team bought out by google + second core team bought out by disney + huge userbase that doesn’t monetize well = 💀
it is crazy how retention standards have fallen so hard in the age of ai
tiktok and ig have >30% d30 retention
no ai chatbot has matched that
hence why people are so desperate to unlock multiplayer ai products with network effects

one of my favourite parts about working in consumer is that there’s usually more criticism than appreciation, and honestly, i love it. every time i open reddit, discord, instagram or support emails, there’s something broken, a suggestion or feedback on what could be better. it keeps everyone, from cofounders to engineers, designers and moderators, close to the people using what we build.
sometimes, even on a quiet weekend with no plans, i’ll open the bug reports and start replying to users. with some of us working est and others ist, someone is usually around to help. responding matters as much as receiving feedback. people feel heard, and knowing someone cares enough to help gives them a reason to come back.
we can’t fix everything immediately or build every feature people ask for, but so much of what we’ve built at @thestatusai has come from these conversations. there’s always something to improve, and being able to hear directly from users, work on it and see the difference is what makes it so rewarding. love working in consumer.

when you think about the path ahead for the goliaths like the leading frontier labs and meta,
it feels obvious rn that consumer AI tackling fun and entertainment is the blue ocean.
both meta and openai tackled that angle with Vibes, Sora, but they failed.
fai's @thestatusai is a good example showing what that can feel like.
too many companies joining the war of fully armed goliaths with their wooden swords.
openai doesn’t want to open a can of worms by making dots free for all chatgpt users before the IPO
but it could mean ceding consumer ground to muse and instinct by framing it as a productivity tool for power users
Dots are included in all Pro, Business Premium and Enterprise plans. This includes the Pro 100 plan. We’ll be looking to further expand access soon.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
OpenAI sources specify dots roll out gradually only in eligible markets to those plans; Pro excludes EEA/UK/Switzerland at launch and access is not immediate for all.
