Really happy to receive the Top Poster award! 🎲 We turned our poster into a board game.
ICYMI: 🏆 Congratulations to yesterday's #ICA25 poster winners 🏆: Kecheng Fang (Chinese U of Hong Kong), Lukas Otto (GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences), and Femke Konings (KU Leuven)! There was a tie for the Top Poster and one Top Student Poster.

Roach is indeed a good friend of China. My previous paper identified him as the #3 most-cited foreign expert in Chinese media: com.cuhk.edu.hk/wp-content/u…

Previously, @kevinroose of NYTimes and @svzwood at The Atlantic noticed the intriguing transformation of the outlet and wrote stories that provided insightful observations. In a recent paper, we empirically reveal the main strategies of its transformation doi.org/10.1177/146144482312…

Our main finding is that The Epoch Times does NOT rely on anti-China or even U.S. far-right political content to draw followers on Facebook—political posts at best only temporarily increase engagement and do not significantly increase followers.

This study is part of a larger project I have been developing: a database of journalistic sourcing in Chinese media. We will launch a website to showcase the database soon. It can be used to study multiple aspects of Chinese media and society.

🙏open.spotify.com/episode/6Oi…

2019 feels like ages ago. As a researcher, I hope my study has documented that year from a special perspective. I am grateful that JCMC accepted this article. The biggest thanks goes to the journalists I interviewed. I am indebted to their insights.

Yesterday was the 10th anniversary of WeChat public platform, or the commonly known “gonghao 公号”. Gonghao has since become the most important channel for Chinese to get news and information. It also gave birth to the “zimeiti (self-media/we media)” industry. (A thread🧵)

I compare it with traditional media in China and "we media" in the West. Using the “push and pull” model I developed, we can see that what makes zimeiti different from traditional media is the role identification of practitioners.

As long as zimeiti industry doesnt develop any professional ideology, it will continue to be a bunch of heartless businesspeople who use whatever strategy to direct Chinese people's attention. The overall quality of Chinese people's information diet, as a consequence, stays low.
