It’s outrageous that disabling AI in Google Admin can also disable Google Search for students. Surely Google’s brilliant engineers can design a clean, safe search interface for schools—one that doesn’t force districts to choose between generative AI and basic search. In the meantime, educators can partner with their librarian to create a curated virtual library and use DuckDuckGo as an alternative search tool. #AI #GOOGLE #EdTech

Turn on Google’s AI on student devices, or lose access to Google Search altogether? That’s the choice educators will face starting in January. Why not just let kids have Google Search without AI? Seems like a reasonable ask to us. Follow us to stay updated on kids and the AI era

A timely post for Election week.
The most dangerous words online may be: “I can tell by looking.” In a world filled with misinformation and well-crafted AI ads, students—and adults—need more than “real or fake.” Teach them to SIFT: Stop. Investigate. Find better coverage. Trace to the source. [fkompar.substack.com/p/sifti…] #MediaLiteracy #AILiteracy

Check out my new post! There has been much talk about advisory boards at AI companies for oversight. Librarians will be asked to clean up the AI Slop, misinformation and thinking offloading mess - let’s get them at the table now.
And, it is important that representatives include public, academic and K-12 school librarians.

Rest in power, Gloria Steinem.
She understood that librarians do more than connect us with books. They democratize knowledge, protect our inner lives, and make freedom possible.
Access to information is power. Reading the books others want banned is an act of resistance.
Honor Gloria’s legacy. Read her work. Support libraries and independent bookstores. Keep fighting for equal rights and the freedom to know.

With book bans increasing in the U.S., it’s interesting that many of the top 10 banned books in 2022 include children’s literature.
Here’s why parents should individually decide what their children read instead of making that choice for everyone.
