I keep saying this: going into treatment and completing it isn’t the measure of success, it's what happens afterward is. I know because I lived it. I spent years struggling with addiction and homelessness. I know what it’s like to leave recovery and still have to face the same problems that were waiting for you before you went in. A treatment bed can help someone stop using drugs, but it can’t give them a home, a job, food in the fridge, a supportive community or someone to talk to when life gets hard. If people can’t afford food, survival can mean stealing it. If they have no legitimate way to earn money, survival can push them toward crime. Today, I have what I didn’t have back then: a safe home, family, purpose, employment, community and support. That’s recovery capital!! We need to stop recycling people through treatment, homelessness, poverty, relapse and the justice system and then wondering why the revolving door keeps spinning. Recovery needs more than a treatment bed, people need a life worth staying in recovery for!
