Five years after Kabul fell, I still think about the people I couldn’t get out. I keep waiting for the friends I left behind to tell me I failed. They never do. I finally wrote about those days. Link in bio 🔗

“I had thought of the risk as mine. It wasn’t.”
That line from my friend @fleischnerj ‘s new piece stopped me.
A powerful reflection on what it actually takes to document truth in dangerous places, and the people whose courage rarely makes it into the final pages.
A must read!

Al-Qaeda has no publicly declared emir. Its de facto leader stays out of sight & now a man the US claimed was killed 7 years ago is back at center stage. Why? @hoffman_bruce & I examine what Hamza bin Laden can give al-Qaeda that Saif al-Adel cannot @smallwars shorturl.at/WI2Ek

#UPDATE: U.S. Airstrike Hits Al-Shabaab Arms Depot in Cal-Madow, Targets Houthi and Al-Shabaab Drone Experts
Puntland authorities and the United States have confirmed a counterterrorism operation targeting an Al-Shabaab weapons-storage site in the Cal-Madow area of the Golis Mountains in northern Somalia.
In a statement issued on Thursday , Puntland’s presidential office said the strike hit a location known as Markad, described as an arms and ammunition depot used by Al-Shabaab to support its operations and threaten security in Puntland and elsewhere in Somalia.
The operation was carried out in coordination with Puntland government agencies, the statement said.
However, reports circulating after the operation said the strike targeted Badri al-Hussain, described as a Houthi drone expert, and Abdi Khalif al-Badawi, who was also described as a specialist in drone technology. The reports further alleged that foreign individuals had been working at the site on missile and drone testing.
The reports emerge amid growing concerns over alleged cooperation between Al-Shabaab and Yemen’s Houthi movement. Somali and regional security officials have increasingly warned that links between the groups may be expanding, including through potential exchanges of technical expertise, weapons knowledge and maritime networks.
“The targeting of locations and facilities used by the group to support its operations is intended to increase pressure and degrade its ability to plan and carry out attacks,” the statement said.
The United States has previously carried out airstrikes against Al-Shabaab targets in Somalia, often in cooperation with Somali security forces. Puntland said the latest operation demonstrated the joint commitment to deny the group safe havens and disrupt its ability to organize attacks.
According to reports, Al-Shabaab and Houthi-linked individuals were preparing final drone and missile tests at the site when they were targeted in today’s airstrike. The reports have not been independently verified.

U.S. military assets acting on intelligence conducted several targeted offensive airstrikes in Markad, Al-Madow Sanag region. The first location, a weapons depot assessed to contain stockpiles of small arms and FPV drones, was struck and obliterated. The second location was a training facility hosting ongoing drone-handling training by foreign nationals for AS militants. At this location, the training site head, alias Moalim Omar, was killed along with a dozen combatants, including foreign instructors.
This was a much-needed action that helped foil the ongoing drone-training program, which was viewed as an immense geopolitical threat.

Yemen’s Houthis have agreed to allow US shipping unfettered access to the Red Sea if Washington refrains from direct military involvement in Saudi-led war. That’s according to US reports, which say the two sides struck the deal amid a Houthi offensive along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

As a New Yorker today is a very sad day. I’m so thankful to @Dr_SaraHarmouch and @gwupoe for bringing me on this panel last week to discuss the threat we still face from Al-Qaeda 25 years after 9/11.
25 years after 9/11, remembering those we lost also means understanding how the threat has evolved.
Hear what experts @Dr_SaraHarmouch, @hoffman_bruce, Colin Smith, @tomsanderson98 and @fleischnerj have to say about where Al-Qaeda is now.

1/ 🧵 Al-Qaeda's As-Sahab released a 25th anniversary video, "A Quarter Century of the 11 September Raids (Part One)." It features footage of a man it presents as Hamza bin Laden. He appears 3 times, & how al-Qaeda frames him matters as much as what he says
