OpenAI just released GPT-5. When users share personal struggles, it sets fewer boundaries than o3. We tested both on INTIMA, our new benchmark for human-AI companionship behaviours. 🧵
Exciting times ahead 🤗
Exciting day for NVIDIA and @huggingface.
Open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty. They allow every developer, startup, university, industry and country to build with, customize and benefit from AI.
Thank you @ClementDelangue for coming to me.
NVIDIA is going to be a great home for Hugging Face, its community and the future of open models. 🤗

For months, I've been deep in the weeds of what it takes to make LLMs work well across languages, and I'm thrilled that this work now has a dedicated home: I'm leading a newly created multilingual team within Science at @MistralAI 🌍
If you’re at #ICLR2026 make sure to catch @GiadaPistilli and talk with her about our paper (poster presentation!) on AI companionship; INTIMA: A Benchmark for Human-AI Companionship Behavior

🇧🇷 Heading to Rio de Janeiro next week for @iclr_conf - if you're around, let's find a moment to chat!
I'll be presenting INTIMA, a benchmark for evaluating AI companionship behaviors in instruction-tuned models.

Is effective altruism’s catastrophist risk agenda shaping EU AI enforcement?
In this deep dive, I explore how existential risks have entered the AI Act implementation, and how they could shape the AI Office's enforcement priorities. 1/5 🧵

We at @huggingface are fortunate to have a unique vantage point on the state of open source AI development. We finally wrote down our observations, from both our own research and that of our peers who have done excellent work investigating the open ecosystem with Hugging Face hub data and beyond.
Presenting the State of Open Source on HF: Spring 2026 edition! Extremely juicy blog post with lots of insights to continue following this year 🤗
Work with @frimelle, @YJernite and @IreneSolaiman!

Open-[source/weights/science] influences much of AI’s uptake, yet the dynamics are being overlooked. “Leadership in [AI] is not fixed and can be reshaped within a single model generation.”
Nice piece from my colleague @frimelle and @ShayneRedford.

BREAKING: China has overtaken the US in the global market for open AI models
A study by MIT and Hugging Face found that Chinese-made open-source AI models have overtaken American developers in global downloads for the first time, capturing 17 percent of the market compared to 15.8 percent for U.S. creators in the past year.
DeepSeek and Alibaba's Qwen dominate Chinese downloads, while U.S. giants like Google, Anthropic and OpenAI remain focused on closed, proprietary systems.

📈 @Alibaba_Qwen models were more than 50% of HF downloads over the past 3 months...
Over 2 billion models served...
The new "Economies of Open Intelligence" paper analyzes 5 years of @huggingface model downloads, showing how the open AI ecosystem is maturing, with global dominance shifting from US to China research labs.
Many more insights in the paper, and it comes with an interactive dashboard so you can explore the data yourself!
Amazing work by @slongpre, @akiki_chris, Campbell Lund, Atharva Kulkarni, Emily Chen, @IreneSolaiman @evijit @YJernite @frimelle

Who is winning the open AI race?
Our new study "Economies of Open Intelligence" maps 2.2B @huggingface downloads across 851k models (2020→2025).
1) Power is rebalancing (US big tech ↓; China + community ↑)
2) Models got big & efficient (MoE, quant, multimodal surge)
3) Intermediaries now matter (adapters/quantizers steer usage)
4) Transparency is slipping

China just passed the U.S. in open model downloads for the first time 👀
New data from Economies of Open Intelligence led by @huggingface policy team & community collaborators, presents some notable observations:
✨ Developer adoption
In 2025, Chinese model developers saw higher global adoption for the first time, driven by the rapid rise of @deepseek_ai and @Alibaba_Qwen.
✨ The “Sino-Multimodal Period”(late 2024–present)
China’s share of downloads reached 17.1%, surpassing the U.S., with DeepSeek + Qwen accounting for 14% of recent activity.
This period also brings larger, more quantized, and expanding multimodal models such as Wan2.1.
✨ Organizational patterns
China’s open model development is more industry-driven (similar to the U.S.), while the EU has more university, nonprofit, and community-led contributors.
fyi - this analysis based on 851k models, 200+ attributes, and 2.2B downloads.
Our new paper Economies of Open Intelligence is out and covered by @Melissahei in the @FinancialTimes.
It offers the clearest picture yet of how global power is shifting inside the open AI ecosystem, and what it means for the open-source community.
We’re releasing the paper, the full dataset, and a live monitoring dashboard because understanding these shifts shouldn’t be limited to insiders.
It should be a public resource for researchers, policymakers, and the community.
