Can efforts to make financial services safer also make them harder to access? They can, if compliance requirements don't reflect the risks institutions actually face. For Uganda's growing digital financial sector, getting this balance right matters. #FinancialInclusion #FinancialIntegrity

Yesterday, FSD Uganda and @ThefiaU launched AML/CFT/CPF Guidelines and Compliance Assessment Toolkits for Tier IV financial institutions and FinTechs. The tools help institutions assess their exposure to financial crime, review existing controls and identify gaps that need attention.

The next test is whether institutions put the guidance into practice. As FSD Uganda CEO @jzkwebiiha emphasised, proportionality isn't about lowering standards. It's about matching the response to the risk. Financial integrity and financial inclusion should reinforce each other. #FinancialInclusion #FinancialIntegrity

Digital finance is expanding in Uganda, but what happens to financial inclusion when people lose trust in the systems they use? During yesterday's X Space on Building Digital Trust, FSD Uganda CEO @jzkwebiiha argued that fraud prevention must be a leadership responsibility, not just a technical issue. A few points from the discussion...

“It’s important for us to look at redress as preventive, not something that we are doing after the fact.” For customers, trust also depends on what happens when something goes wrong. Can they report fraud easily? Will anyone respond? How quickly can they expect a resolution? Effective redress helps protect confidence in digital finance.

But how prepared are financial institutions to prevent and respond to fraud? FSD Uganda's 2024 Cyber and Fraud Risk Landscape Assessment identified just 264 qualified cybersecurity and fraud professionals across Uganda's commercial financial institutions, less than 10% of estimated need. The findings point to a capacity gap that institutions must address as digital finance expands.

It's been valuable working together to understand what drives the adoption of digital financial services among farmers. These experiences continue to shape how we think about making digital finance work for underserved communities. Thank you for sharing!
Great article in @DailyMonitor on digital finance, penned by Janani Luwum at @fsduganda. It summarises a lot of the learnings we've had working with FSDU over the years to increase financial inclusion in agri. Read it here: monitor.co.ug/uganda/oped/co…

Young women are not one financial customer segment. FSD Uganda's research identifies five distinct groups of young women aged 16–24, with different patterns of financial service use. What do these differences mean for how providers design and deliver financial services? Read the full research here: tinyurl.com/25mzw94c #FinancialInclusionNugget

Not all young women want loans. Some are deliberately avoiding credit because the costs and repayment risks outweigh the benefits. Drawing on research from Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda, including young women's experiences documented by FSD Uganda, @RaniYouthSavngs asks whether financial inclusion efforts are starting with what young women actually need. Thank you, @NIRA_Ug, for convening this important conversation. Reliable digital identity is a key foundation for financial inclusion, enabling institutions to verify customers, reduce fraud risks and make formal financial services more accessible. We're pleased to have supported the Expo and Symposium and to continue contributing to this work.
APPRECIATION Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSD Uganda) NIRA extends its appreciation to Financial Sector Deepening Uganda (FSD Uganda) for its participation and contribution to the My Identity Expo and Symposium. @fsduganda has been an important partner in Uganda’s digital identity and financial-inclusion journey, working with the @BOU_Official, @ugbankers and NIRA on the electronic Know-Your-Customer (e-KYC) initiative. The e-KYC platform enables supervised financial institutions to verify customer identities in real time using the NIN, reducing the time required for customer onboarding while helping lower the risk of fraudulent identities. FSD Uganda’s participation at the #MyIdentityExpoAndSymposium26 therefore brought valuable experience to the Expo’s conversation on how trusted identity can open doors to formal financial services, particularly for people who have traditionally been underserved by the financial system.

Many conversations at #FITSPA2026 echoed a question we explore in our latest blog: what makes people continue using digital financial services after gaining access? Drawing on our work with digital platforms serving farmers, @Jananiluwum explores the role of trust in sustained adoption.
Digital platforms can extend financial services to underserved communities at scale. But reaching people and getting them to use those services consistently are two different challenges. If technology enables access but trust sustains adoption, how do we build trust at scale? Our latest blog explores this question: Technology Enables Access. Trust Sustains Adoption - wp.me/pfb0jV-8zE @Emata_UG @questdigito @clinicPesa @ensibuuko @FitspaUG

Uganda doesn't have to reinvent the wheel to expand digital financial access. At #FITSPA2026, FSD Uganda's @dakullu called for better use of existing infrastructure, stronger interoperability and governance that enables different players to connect.
