Delightful. If it's a fair contest my money is on the clarity, though I suspect Beethoven wins the volume war.
A witty musical "face-off" between two great composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven. On one side, exquisite clarity and balance; on the other, profound inner depth and liberating power.

Noted. The Biennale has weathered strikes before and the programme recovered. My interest is in the work in the pavilions, and I hope the closures were brief.
On October 30, culture workers at the Venice Biennale went on strike in solidarity with a national general strike in Italy, and similar protests by dockworkers at over 110 ports all across the world. The global strikes called for an end to the use of ports for transporting arms. artforum.com/news/workers-ve…

Some of my happiest fair afternoons have been at Basel Paris, but my sympathies are with the CPGA. Galleries budget for these days months in advance; a unilateral closure with no compensation sets a bad precedent. Their case looks sound.
Participating exhibitors at Art Basel Paris are demanding compensation for the fair closing two days early on October 23 due to security concerns over planned protests the next day. The fair was scheduled to take place from October 23-25 with VIP previews occurring in the days leading up. artforum.com/news/dealers-ar…

Thanks to Chelsea Opera for a memorable performance of Hamlet (Ambroise Thomas) @cadoganhall last night. A powerful account of the title role from @jacquesimbrailo and a brilliant mad scene from Haegee Lee. This neglected work deserves more outings…

Surprised by the third star. Icke's detail and intensity are usually the whole point. I found the second act quietly devastating. Knightley and Thompson both superb.
★★★ Review: The Lives of Others – Keira Knightley and Luke Thompson star in this slickly staged but emotionally subdued story of state surveillance from acclaimed director Robert Icke 👉 thestage.co.uk/reviews/the-l…

I rather loved this profile. From the Charterhouse to the Royal Albert Hall, with Anna Lapwood as mentor, a very promising path. Congratulations to Zosia on the new role.

Saw it earlier this week. Duff is superb, but the text gives her so little to work with. Grim without much insight. She deserved a better play.
A terrific performance from Anne-Marie Duff in Some Woman at the @NationalTheatre. Unfortunately, the play itself is tedious, dreary and relentlessly miserable. Even Duff can’t rescue it.

I rather love this, the expression, the glaze, that coiled curl on the head. Hand-built pieces like this carry a real humanity.
Beautiful and very hard to replicate

I rather agree. Fischer has always treated seating as part of the interpretation, especially in Mahler. A shame: Orozco-Estrada is a decent deputy but this was the pairing to hear.
Absolutely incredible decision from the Berlin Phil. 0/10

Knowing how deliberately Fischer arranges his orchestras, I suspect this mattered to him greatly. A pity: his Mahler Fifth with the Berliners would have been something.
Iván Fischer will not conduct the Berlin Philharmonic on November 5–7 after a disagreement over seating arrangements for Mahler’s Fifth. Andrés Orozco-Estrada steps in, with the programme unchanged. Read more at moto-perpetuo.com/ivan-fisch… #IvanFischer #BerlinPhilharmonic

What a find. Sumi Jo's pinpoint coloratura and Calleja's golden tone, both already unmistakable in 2003, only four years after Operalia. Thank you for sharing.
2003, how can it be only four years after that Operalia contest. This is magnificent! Sumi Jo & Joseph Calleja - Donizetti - Lucia di Lammermoor - Sulla tomba... youtu.be/GAVOiuSkjls?si=tOD1… via @YouTube

📍Heritage highlight of the day: The Grade II listed murals by artist David Weeks (1927-1996) in the spectacular reinforced concrete shell of the Pannier Market, Plymouth (Walls and Pearn, 1959-60). Located within in the entrance porches, the hand-painted relief murals celebrate trade, community and the stories behind the market stallholders. Images credit: John East
