The fallacy being spread about code reviews goes like this: Guys the future is to not have code reviews. Therefore, be prepared. Therefore, don't do them NOW. No, now is not the future.

My contribution to the book: Zen and Ruby came to the West from Japan. They enlighten us, like gem reflections in daylight. whysfox.es/by-page/

Want to delete an association but not sure what still uses it? Rails 8.1 can tell you. Add deprecated: true and every use is reported, including preloads, joins and post_ids. Pick :warn, :raise or :notify (an Active Support notification you can send to your error tracker).

Talking OSS & AI is complicated because there is no single definition of OSS. There are different types of projects, profiles and, specially, different types of **motivations**. Those doing OSS for its social aspect may legitimately not see a place for AI in their projects.

In my toy apps, vibe code works. But in client code with millions of lines, there is no patch that is right on the get go. I steer by reading the code. Those not reading... if you were in this project, you'd be shipping shit. Incorrect code and incorrect tests.
I've been reviewing a lot of code written by Opus 5.5, and it still seems to make a lot of bad software engineering decisions. The kind that will accumulate/calcify into unmaintainable software over time. IMO even the agents will struggle to maintain vibecoded software.

The agents are catalysts, they save my client tons of time. It's truly impressive. But in this project in 2026, no way I don't review the code.

Active Job Continuations is one of the most powerful recent additions to Rails, and its applicability goes far beyond restarts. Learn more in my recent #RailsWorld talk and check out AJDC: evilmartians.com/events/rail… github.com/palkan/ajdc
Deploys restart your job workers. In Rails 8.1, a long job doesn't have to start over. Include ActiveJob::Continuable, split the work into steps, and save a cursor as you go. When the job restarts, finished steps are skipped and the current one picks up from its cursor.

I wonder what is going to happen with AoC. I think the paradigm shift is making different types of programmers apparent. Like the ones that considered programming a chore, or the ones working on a product, happy to be able to go faster than ever.

I think the AoC player may be in its own class. Regardless of AI usage, they enjoy programming and problem solving. AI is a catalyst for them, not a relief. Like chess players: Computers have solved it, but who cares! They love studying and playing chess for the sake of it.

Solid Cache and Solid Queue run lots of small queries on their own databases. Rails 8.2 lets you turn off SQL instrumentation per connection: sql_notifications: false in database.yml. No SQL notification events, no SQL log lines. Your main database keeps full instrumentation.
