How many of the loudest sports critics, beat writers, and hardcore fans were actually good at sports themselves? Better yet, how many were underachievers who now make a habit of criticizing athletes and coaches performing and leading at levels they never came close to reaching? The game sure looks easy from a recliner, a luxury suite, or the stands, especially with a beer in your hand. But the athletes and coaches you love to praise one day and tear apart the next are incredibly skilled and dedicated. Most people couldn’t come close to doing what they do, regardless of how good they’ve convinced themselves they once were. And just because someone makes millions of dollars doesn’t mean they’re not human. Ever been nervous? Ever experienced anxiety, fear, or self-doubt? Now multiply those feelings by 45,000+ people watching you live and millions more judging your every move. Now imagine being a coach, responsible not only for your own career but for leading, teaching, developing, and making decisions that affect the lives and futures of other people. The pressure is real. The difficulty is real. And the emotions are real. Athletes and coaches face relentless criticism, scrutiny, and sometimes personal attacks from people who often know very little about what happens behind the scenes. It’s easy to question every play, every mistake, and every coaching decision when you’re not the one responsible for making it. It’s even easier when you’ve never had to perform, lead, risk failure publicly, or face that kind of pressure yourself. Criticism is part of sports. Accountability is necessary. Nobody is above either. But there’s a tremendous difference between evaluating someone’s performance and attacking their character. And here’s the question I wish every critic, beat writer, and hardcore fan would ask themselves: If that were your son or daughter out there competing, coaching, making mistakes, and giving everything they had, would your perspective change? You don’t have to be a great athlete or coach to understand sports. But you should have enough humility to recognize how difficult excellence really is. A little perspective. A little humility. And a lot more humanity.
