“The unfortunate reality is that graduate workers have to defend ourselves not only from Trump, but also from administrators, who would rather cut education and research than reconsider executive bloat, capital projects, and other boondoggles.”
“Many graduate student workers are concerned that university administrators will respond to the attacks on higher education by passing the hardship on to their workers.”

We were honored to have Rashida standing with us against repression yesterday! The university administration must recognize that they manage a public institution which serves the people of Michigan—including those who speak up against genocide.
UM’s attempts to silence pro-Palestine protesters concern us as grad students who value academic freedom and as a labor union—an organization which conducts protests, rallies, and pickets as part of organizing.

New dispatch! The 2023 grad strike at the University of Michigan was a signal struggle in the recent upsurge of militancy in higher education, from which organizers in the sector stand to learn as they confront new and forbidding challenges:

❤️✊🔬 ANNOUNCEMENT: Graduate researchers at U-M are unionizing with GEO!

Due to a 1977 court decision and a 2013 state bill, grad researchers have long been excluded from our bargaining unit. In 2023, Michigan finally recognized graduate researchers as workers. Today, we are signing cards in order to file for an election with MERC in October.
Over 900 grads have already signed a card! If you are a grad researcher at U-M and haven’t signed, you can sign digitally at bit.ly/GEOresearcherunion
The summer before a bargaining year and after an office move is a great time to reflect on past wins… and poster designs!
Members, come get your retro posters at the new office :)
We condemn the Trump administration’s unjust immigration policies and we call on the Regents and President Grasso to stand with undocumented grad workers!

The University of Michigan is actively intimidating and targeting students and recent graduates for their advocacy for Palestinian human rights. I recently met with interim UofM President Grasso to express my outrage over this ongoing repression of Palestinian solidarity and anti-genocide activism by UofM administration and the Office of Student Conflict Resolution (OSCR). I call on OSCR to immediately drop its disproportionate, politically-motivated proceedings against students and alumni that are intended to silence dissent on campus.
⚖️ U-M is using its Office of Student Conflict Resolution to punish students—undergrads and grads—for pro-Palestine activism the admin has previously attempted and failed to repress through the legal system.

Show support for our comrades at Columbia as they also bargain this year! Our admins are following the same playbook: underpaying and replacing the next generation of scholars because they care more about the endowment than teaching and research.
Replying to @SW_Columbia
The cynicism is appalling, even for Columbia.
We call on our fellow workers in higher ed: sign the open letter to CU & pledge not to replace our labor.

Columbia is replacing union labor as we negotiate a new contract.
Admin is emailing other universities to recruit teachers, while refusing to reappoint returning SWC instructors, who still don't know if they will teach or get paid in September.
This is textbook union busting
