Back in the late 90s, early 2000s era, there was a joke that frequently made its way around the EDM producer community. It goes like this:
Being an electronic dance music producer, you want your own unique set of beats. Not somebody else’s sound—your own. So you build a beat library. Then you notice it’s all predicated on somebody else’s kick or snare. So you record your own. Except you’re just recording somebody else’s drums. So you make your own drums: source the goatskin, the frames, the wood. Then you realize it’s still somebody else’s raw product. So you tan your own goatskin, stretch it, dry it, form it, tune it.
Anyway, I don’t make electronic dance music anymore.
