DS9 as a whole basically works on this premise. It’s fixed location feels like zooming in on the next steps after a Next Generation episode- where previously the Enterprise flies off to its next adventure, DS9 is about the lives of the people they leave behind

Wolf 359 was the single most disastrous battle Starfleet had faced on TNG, an entire fleet wiped out in one encounter. The show moves on from those wrecks as the crew fight to find a solution; DS9 introduces us to a man who has never really left that battlefield.

It’s also good dare I say world building. Too much genre media the last decade or so is metatextually about what these mean to us with characters who are fans of the property but in-universe. Sisko’s backstory is instead built by imagining what it was like to live in that world

It is such a bold choice at the height of TNG’s popularity to introduce the protagonist of your new show as a guy who just hates Picard’s guts. He gets over it by the end of the episode but these men are not friends. We know Picard as a TV dad but for Sisko Picard ruined his life
