Huge loss for the renal community. A hilarious friend, fantastic colleague and brilliant nephrologist. Tubular extraordinaire. Ben will be so very much missed by us all.
We are heartbroken to announce that Prof (Stephen) Ben Walsh, died peacefully on 30th Sept while surrounded by family & friends. Both his family & @RenalUCL are raising funds to find a way to honour his memory and achievements. More info below: justgiving.com/page/in-memor… Ben's passion for science & medicine was an integral part of who he was. And after self-diagnosing with lung cancer 18 months ago, he decided keep his condition private to protect his clinical and academic work. Remarkably Ben continued to work throughout his illness, right to the very end, ensuring that his students, colleagues and patients were taken care of, and that all he had built would continue on. There are no words to really express the profound sadness we feel, the loss of a dear friend, colleague and mentor. He will leave a very large hole in our lives and he will not be forgotten. Details of funeral/memorial services will be made available in due course. We're also requesting anyone with pictures or videos of Ben to upload these to the Google Photos or Dropbox links below. We've also attached a link to a Google Doc for messages of condolence you may wish to leave for the family. Ta da! Glad to be of help. Bluesky a calmer place, no ads and much less of the other things that are 'suboptimal' on this platform. Needs a bigger crowd sharing more papers though... Can't do it all on my own! 😅
So much harder to use Twitter to get good medical info and stay up to date than a few years back... so consider bsky.app/ - already found great paper doi.org/10.1016/S2666-5247(2… that had escaped me on Twitter thanks to @gpollara

Our thoughts and very best hopes are with our friend and former colleague Tom Doherty, his wife Anne and all family since his fall and disappearance in the Pyrenees. We desperately hope he is found soon. Our great thanks to all supporting the search.

In our new short report in @JIDJournal, we estimate that half of all Mtb transmission occurs before individuals would be expected to access healthcare - and 80% of this transmission is attributable to subclinical disease. bit.ly/4ddE9yn

So happy our work on TB transmission is published this week @NatureMicrobiol. This work would not have been possible without the brilliant supervision by @MahaFarhat and the public health departments who shared their data despite being swamped with work during COVID

We have a new comment/analysis out on a recent high profile paper in JAMA IM that aimed to compare cefepime (CPM) vs pip-taz (PTZ) for sepsis using an instrumental variable (IV) Essentially, we think the results are biased due to a collider... 🧵 below. medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

Backstory on our recent paper @JExpMed, showing that frequent viral and bacterial infections drive heightened nasal innate immunity in children. This work was inspired by the puzzling observation that kids were less susceptible to #COVID_19 than adults... a thread (1/12) rupress.org/jem/article/221/…
