You’ve likely been inundated by political advertising lately, especially concerning Mississippi’s U.S. Senate race. I’ve been seeing ads from Democrat Scott Colom suggesting that @cindyhydesmith Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith voted to “kick 160,000 off Medicaid.” That’s a lie. Here is the truth: They were absolutely zero cuts in the federal Medicaid match (FMAP) to states for American citizens across all of the various coverage groups. Those eligible for traditional Medicaid include the blind, disabled, pregnant women, seniors whose household income is at or below the eligibility limit. For the able-bodied adult coverage group, which was established in Obamacare and commonly known as “Medicaid expansion,” a work requirement was implemented. To qualify for benefits, an applicant in this coverage group must work for 80 hours or provide 80 hours of community service a month. Or be a full-time student. The other major provisions relate to non-citizens. First, though illegals are not and never have been eligible for federal Medicaid, legal immigrants who have been granted asylee, parolee or refugee status have been eligible for decades, but are now are no longer eligible. Additionally, the FMAP (federal match) for the expansion coverage group in those states who cover illegals EXCLUSIVELY with state dollars, is reduced to 80% from 90%. None of these provisions apply to the State of Mississippi, because we have not expanded Medicaid and we don’t have a separate program for true illegals. These provisions are reasonable and appropriate, as they prioritize benefits for American citizens! There are NO CUTS in the bill for Americans enrolled in Medicaid. Try something different Democrats. Quit lying!
