Revolut founder Nik Storonsky says working weekends is essential to survive, calling it "purely statistical"
"So China is 996. And then even if you are good in Europe or even if you are good in US, how can you outcompete people who work nine to nine, 6 days a week?"
"When I started in the startup space, there were 140 companies. Within five years, only three companies survived. They all worked on weekends."
"Within 10 years, only 2 companies survived out of 140. So I think work on weekends is a must if you want to survive. Purely statistical."
"Out of all European companies, we're probably one of the hardest working, and I think we're also one of the hardest working companies if you include US as well."
Nik Storonsky is one of the most hardcore and competitive founders I’ve ever talked to. He’s the founder of Revolut, a $115 billion company, and wants to be the number one bank in 100 countries.
When someone asked Nik if he was coming for Jamie Dimon's lunch, he said “I’m coming for his dinner.”
“We want to dominate, otherwise what’s the point?”
He removed every VC from his board, and when one investor pushed him too far, he started his own fund to compete with them.
Nik has a lot of ideas on talent, product design, marketing, constraints, and what makes founder-led companies special.
This is a fascinating conversation about competition, speed, and building a machine-like company.

Just launched my first product, @JoinCommPulse 🤝
It helps communities find project CMs, request spots, and manage Web3 collabs in one place.
Give it a follow and try it out. I’d love your honest feedback on what’s useful, missing, or needs improving.
Finding a project’s CM shouldn’t take a hundred DMs.
Community Pulse is live 🤝

“Yeah, there are these companies called neoclouds. They buy GPUs from NVIDIA and then rent it back out to the hyperscalers. Where do they get money for the GPUs? Excellent question. Turns out they get the money from NVIDIA themselves, along with a bunch of private credit lenders whose loans are backed by the GPU itself. Elon just said all of them might go to zero soon. Anyways, what are you doing later tonight?”

there are only 2 durable moats left that no AI model will ever replace:
1) obsession, hunger and execution. the ability to iterate and build new moats faster than the old ones get copied.
2) distribution and attention, earned through reputation, trust and even regulation. the thing that makes people choose you and stay with you over the copycats.
2) only matters if you have 1)

Pretty much.
As of the past few weeks, debt markets have almost entirely shut off access to money for any company that doesn’t have substantial revenue independent of AI data centers.
SpaceX closed $40B of debt for GPUs, but we’re investment grade and have Starlink & launch revenue.
That means the 200+ neoclouds are going to see guppy-level death and consolidation. Some will make it through, but not many.
