Healey’s inaction is completely irresponsible.
He failed to commit to spending 3% of GDP on defence by 2030. No plan to tackle the deficit. No plan to cut welfare spending.
He even reduced the Government’s fiscal headroom - essentially our country’s ‘rainy day fund’. We now have headroom equivalent to just three days and a half days of government spending.
That’s no way to run our country.
John Healey needs to get a grip.
Good to chat to you @bbcnickrobinson about the choices I would make as Chancellor.
Not all will agree with them, but, just as when I was a CFO, I will always set them out transparently and protect the nation’s finances.
This from @thetimes. 👇
Two explanations:
A. Labour Party before country - early election inbound.
B. The Chancellor really hasn’t got what it takes to make a tough decision.
Neither are good.
Healey’s defence plan only exists in his imagination.
When he resigned, he said: “3% of GDP on defence in 2030 is what Britain must set.”
Today, he failed to deliver.
The best he can do is a plan to make a plan. He has lost all credibility. John Healey should resign.
We Conservatives set John Healey five simple Budget tests.
He has failed them all.
The Chancellor hasn't even funded 3% defence spending by 2030. The very issue he resigned over!
Healey has kicked the can down the road, and failed to take the tough decisions Britain needs.
This is going to hurt!
The problem with Labour’s borrow and spend addiction is high interest rates for everyone else.
(And yes, they are even higher now than that budget!)
🚨 John Healey has confirmed he will keep maxing out our country’s credit card.
Debt interest is forecast to be £14 billion higher this year.
Our debt is already over £3 trillion.
He should have got a grip and cut spending. Instead, he’s kicked all the tough decisions down the road.
