Sheer brilliance from @srajagopalan for spotting amazing talent very early and god bless @lachygroom for his support of some amazing cos (including a portco).
HAVING SAID THAT, the hard tech revolution in india has been brewing from well before and has been supported by many many angels & investors for a very long time @ashleevance - would encourage you to explore wider and you will find many gems and their early supporters.
Here's a short list to start with but there are many more (this is also for those dunking on Indian VCs - open your eyes friends ...and recognise the facts for what they are. yes we need more but don't discount what is already being done)
SEDEMAC: Pioneered sensorless motor control technology, enabling reliable, low-cost integrated starter-generators without position sensors in two- and three-wheelers.
EEKI: Developed patented, soil-free growing chambers with IoT automation to enable high-yield, water-efficient, year-round vegetable farming at scale.
PRAAN: Developed filterless air purification technology using electrostatic particle separation to remove particulate pollution from industrial spaces at low maintenance cost.
INITO: Developed patented multi-hormone biosensing and spectral mapping technology, enabling precise at-home fertility hormone measurement, ovulation prediction, and confirmation.
PEPPERMINT: Developed proprietary autonomous navigation and patented multi-action cleaning technology, enabling industrial-scale robotic floor cleaning with reduced manual intervention.
CRADLEWISE: Developed patented AI-powered smart cribs combining 3D sensing, predictive sleep monitoring, and automated soothing to detect early waking signs and help babies stay asleep longer.
POLYMERIZE: Developed proprietary, materials-science-trained AI models that predict material properties and optimize chemical formulations, accelerating polymer and advanced-materials discovery while reducing costly trial-and-error experimentation.
BIOCOMPUTE: Developed a prototype DNA-based data storage system using a novel approach that avoids de novo DNA synthesis, aiming to make archival data storage dramatically denser, cheaper, and more energy-efficient.
BACALT: Developed proprietary non-sterile fermentation technology to convert agricultural waste into high-performance biodegradable polymers, offering scalable, cost-competitive alternatives to petroleum-based additives and microplastics.
ORIGIN: Developed a modular, AI-powered construction robot that autonomously performs multi-step wall finishing - including compound application, sanding, and priming - on dynamic construction sites.
Some of these are portcos so I have had the opportunity to see their journeys very closely from the early days.
There are MANY MANY others - see the SpecialeInvest and GrowX portco for example. Look at SpectrumImpact and the work they are doing to support innovation. Look at a wide range of angels who've written checks to these at many others. Check all the work at NCL in Pune.
India's hard tech revolution has been supported by many many people in India for many years now. More supporters the better!
Somehow, @srajagopalan and @lachygroom have managed to fund a hard-tech revolution in India.
There's something rather massive going on, and everyone else has missed it.
Our story - corememory.com/p/a-new-india…
Thanks for the mention, Soumitra. Raising for hardware in India used to be an uphill climb, and it is good to see how much that has changed.
The gap at the growth stage is real, and we’re glad to be working on it with peers like you :)
Ashlee - I have been a US-India cross-border VC for a decade and a half now. And I totally get the sentiment around the journey of Ather and many such hardware companies that started in the 2010-2020 generation. They truly struggled to raise early-stage capital in India, given VC was concentrating into eCommerce and Fintech in that decade.
Even in those years, the likes of Speciale Invest, YourNest, GrowX, Endiya, VentureEast, Blume, as well as Indian arms of global VCs like Accel, did provide early-stage capital to hardware companies, but the quantum was relatively small, hard to access, and at very low valuations (founders from that generation saw insane dilution levels very early).
This has dramatically changed now. India has an active base of angels, micro-VCs, homegrown VCs, global VCs, and strategics/ corporate Family Offices who are willing to bet at the pre-seed & seed stage in deeptech/ hardware.
Further, the Govt. is now diverting sovereign money to these managers for early-stage deeptech investing, committing ~$12B over the next 6 years via the RDI scheme.
Top-tier tech schools like the IITs, IISc, BITS, etc. now have vibrant incubation programs, many of which have also been allocated RDI LP dollars by the govt. with the objective that early-stage tech derisking in deeptech companies can be funded by them.
Also, similar to the US for many decades now, India now has many examples of professors and researchers stepping out to start venture-backed companies that leverage their academic work (eg., Prof Satya of IIT Madras with ePlane and Prof Arin of IIT Bombay with Inspecity).
However, I do agree that the Indian venture ecosystem at large needs to:
(1) Show more courage & patience at the pre-seed stage.
(2) Deliver a better experience for founders, both during the investment process as well as in portfolio value creation.
(3) Unlock domestic growth-stage capital for deeptech, as the funnel really dries up at Series B and beyond.
But taking a step back, the Indian deeptech venture ecosystem has come a long way since 2011 (which is when I entered venture in India), has shown continued progress on every front, and I expect this to continue and, in fact, become faster over the next decade, with geopolitical realignment + India's macroeconomic growth & scale providing tailwinds.
PS: As an aside, I run a Solo GP fund called Operators Studio @opsstudiovc here in SF, where, in addition to backing Silicon Valley startups leveraging India, I have also actively invested in India-based deeptech startups that have the ambition and capability to go global.
Like you, I am bullish on India deeptech as a decadal venture theme well into the 2030s.
Below is a quick snapshot of my India-based deeptech portfolio (all manufacturing locally). I have been a first check Superangel investor in almost every case:
1) Spacetech - @AuleSpace, @AstrophelHQ, @Cosmochute
2) Aerospace - Aspera (from the Hoskote gang), @ParsecAerospace
3) Precision Engineering & Manufacturing - @NaxatraLabs, @Adiabatic_IN
4) Defense-tech - @SharangShakti, @HyprixAviation
5) Materials - CarbonStrong, Planet Material Labs
6) Consumer Hardware - @cradlewise, @BreethrHQ
7) Robotics - @osmosbot
8) Mobility - @Blinqmobility
...and many more in the pipeline for this Fund.

A $250 drone can destroy tanks or aircrafts worth millions of dollars. India faced 500+ rogue drone incidents last year.
Our latest investment: @ArmoryShield - because 100% indigenously built, counter-drone capabilities will become central to 🇮🇳 defence needs.
When we @AntlerIndia committed to backing Armory a few months back, we didn't foresee that recent geopolitical events (Ukraine-Russia / Hamas-Israel / terrorist attacks on India) would bring the need for counter-drone security for India into the spotlight. Anti-drone security is no longer optional. It’s the new perimeter.
And we now know India shouldn't rely on imported defence. We need something 100% indigenously built.
Excited to be among the first believers in the Armory team led by @singhamardeep (earlier part of the core team that built @ideaforge_tech, IPO in 2023). In Armory, we see a team deeply committed to first-principles thinking and strong convictions to do the right things in the right way.
Glad to do this with good friends @ashish__taneja @growXventures @a1purva @ultasawaal
