Oil is typically C12H26 or heavier. Carbon is 12 times heavier than hydrogen. Therefore, a barrel of crude oil (42 U.S. gallons) contains approximately 314 pounds of carbon. This is based on the fact that crude oil is roughly 84-87% carbon by weight, and a typical barrel weighs about 300-360 pounds, depending on the oil's density However, this varies slightly with oil type (light vs. heavy crude). When burned, this carbon combines with oxygen to form CO₂, releasing about 3.67 times its weight in CO₂ (e.g., ~935 pounds of CO₂ per barrel). When Carney imposes a NetZero constraint on new pipelines, he's basically killing the projects before they get off the table.
