Traditional smart contracts are really good when the answer is already clear. If X happens, do Y. If the balance is this, execute that. But what happens when the contract needs information from the real world? What if the question is: “Was the service actually delivered?” “Did this event really happen?” “Did the other side meet the agreement?” Those answers may not exist neatly onchain. This is where GenLayer’s Intelligent Contracts become interesting. With GenVM, contracts can work with information from the public web and AI models, while validators independently evaluate the result and reach consensus through GenLayer’s Optimistic Democracy approach. To me, that changes the conversation. EVM is great at executing rules. GenVM is designed for cases where execution alone is not enough and the contract needs to deal with information, context and judgment. And this matters even more as AI agents become more independent. An agent may hire another agent, pay for a service or complete a task. The hard part won’t always be sending the transaction. The hard part could be deciding whether the agreement was actually fulfilled. That is the problem @GenLayer is building toward. Not just smarter contracts. A way for the internet to make decisions when the answer cannot simply be found inside the blockchain.
