The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India congratulates Dr. Ashoke Sen, @ictstifr-Infosys Madhava Chair Professor, Bengaluru, on receiving the Oskar Klein Medal for 2026. He is the first Indian physicist to receive this prestigious honour.
Prof. Sen is globally recognised for his pioneering contributions to string theory, particularly his work on S-duality, the precision counting of black hole entropy and string field theory. His research has played a significant role in advancing modern string theory and deepening our understanding of fundamental physics.
Jointly awarded by @Stockholm_Uni and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Oskar Klein Medal recognises distinguished contributions to physics. This recognition adds to Prof. Sen’s distinguished achievements, which include the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics (2012), the Dirac Medal (2014), the Padma Shri (2001) and the Padma Bhushan (2013).

This man on my left is the first Indian to win Boltzmann Medal, the highest honour in Statistical Physics.
And yesterday, ICTP announced that he has been awarded the prestigious Dirac Medal for his contributions to theoretical physics.
But his story is much bigger than the awards.
Meet Prof. Deepak Dhar, one of India’s finest theoretical physicists.
He studied at Allahabad University and later went to IIT Kanpur for his master’s, where he decided to pursue physics seriously as a career.
What came next was even more fascinating.
He went to Caltech for his PhD, where he was exposed to some of the greatest minds in physics and even worked with legendary Nobel laureate Richard Feynman as his teaching assistant.
He had everything one could wish for. He could have stayed in the US and built a remarkable career there.
But he chose to return to India.
He came back and contributed deeply to building India’s scientific ecosystem and Today, he serves as a Distinguished Professor at ICTS-TIFR, Bengaluru, where I recently had the privilege of shooting an episode with him.
He is genuinely one of the GOATs of theoritical physics, yet remains incredibly humble and grounded.
Such a proud moment for Indian science.

18 years ago today, I reached the biggest peak of my sporting life.
Life since has taught me that the spaces between the peaks matter just as much. 🥇

Jinks, congratulations on a great career, buddy. You’ve done wonders for Indian cricket, and you can be very proud of your journey. The safest pair of hands in the slips and my favourite Test batting partner. Wishing you well always. God bless. 🤝🇮🇳

We stand in solidarity with the youth of our country.
Their voices deserve to be heard — loud, clear, and without fear. They are the heartbeat of our democracy and the true architects of our nation’s future.
Let us listen, support, and empower them. The energy, courage, and dreams of our young people will shape the India we aspire to build.
Jai Hind.
